The Variability of Clone-Only plants

Example: Gorilla Glue #4 -a clone-only plant

There should be little variability in it since it is all the same exact genetic material...right?

And yet, the quality and effect of this clone is only as good as the growers who are growing it allow it to be, apparently. I have access to many different "brands" of GG#4 ...and guess what...They are all different. Yes, there are physical similarities to most of the versions I have seen....but the flavor and effect are quite variable.

How can it be that Grower 'A' will experience a clone throwing a bunch of nanners under perfect growing conditions....plants that produce skinny buds....plants that don't smell as strong in flower...etc...while Grower 'B' will have a perfect harvest with the same exact clone under less-than-perfect conditions?

Is it possible that a clone taken from a lower branch may be more susceptible to going on to become a poor example of the genetics, while a clone taken from an upper branch will produce a better example?

i just went thru around 60 gg4 cuts. from dif areas of dif olants. some from veg while some were from flowering. after a few months every cut looks the same. most of these went to the same guy and into the same regimine. but dif rooms, dif regimines will give dif results for sure. hes running my cut but they taste and smell dif. looks the same tho.

It's been discussed on the boards before, in the Clone Only thread, that GG#4 does indeed grow "dud" branches. If you clone one of these "duds", you will then grow a "dud" version of GG#4, and unfortunately I've been unlucky enough to be the victim of this. It clearly lacked the scents, and visuals, associated with GG#4. I was crushed that clone turned out to be such a complete waste of time.

Also, all of the different "brands" of GG#4 that you mentioned, are most likely crosses, or S1's, of the original. That's why some traits are present when others are clearly not. That's one of the worst part about dealing with clones, how rare it is when you know with certainty that what your getting is indeed the real deal.

that's why when I get a clone & grow it I clone it just in case that wouldn't help if I cloned a dud branch though I guess you could record which babies came from which branch & hope for the best I've been having pretty good luck with clone lately

thats because gg#4 has shit genetics as to going hermie. All these breeders are breeding that shit too . I try to avoid unstable strains . I would recommend g13 ,white widow I know those should be stable . GG#4 is good smoke but not stable as I mentioned

gg#4 just wouldn't perform for me & there are so many strains available to me in clone form I won't be trying it again any time soon

GG4 Notorious for hermaphroditism, since it was originally a hermaphrodite. Larfy assed buds even in full sun my trimmers almost went on strike. Sure was tasty and loud though. Having said that, you are correct that a clone is an identical copy of the parent plant, and should produce very similar traits all else being equal. Which is the Caveat, and by the way why there are great growers and then there is everyone else. Now in some plants like the yew, if you took a cutting from the top of the plant It would produce a tall skinny tree but if taken lower in the parent plant it would grow out to be short and squat. I haven’t really seen that in cannabis, but I’m sure it’s out there, maybe more than I realize, I tend to lean more toward the nurture rather than the nature.

Genetics determines maximum potential. It's up to the grower to provide conditions to the plant, so that it may achieve this potential. Additionally, different environmental conditions will bring out different phenotypical expressions in a given genotype.

What your talking about is phenoplasticity the same cut grew in one room vs another will possibly look totally different uk cheese is a prime example of this there will be many others but yeah some clones are more flexible than others that way

The definition of “phenotype”.

The term "phenotype" refers to the observable physical properties of an organism; these include the organism's appearance, development, and behavior. An organism's phenotype is determined by its genotype, which is the set of genes the organism carries, as well as by environmental influences upon these genes.

This is why identical clones can grow differently for various growers.

Another major issue is people calling seed plants or other clones by the same name as the clone only to try to catch on the hype. I remember when GG came out, there was multiple original cuts, The #4 cut was just the favorite. And the fact is if you cross it, even an S1, there is a decent chance it won’t be the same as the original.
