Too much night light?

I've been reading about the importance of complete darkness for 8-12 hours and my plants have been positioned where they get the best morning light but it's also somewhat under the umbrella of light my porch light gives off. Is this a problem? My plants are in first-week flower. Thanks!

how far away are we talking? what kind of porch light?

Are the plants in darkness but you can see the light? or they are actually being touched by the beam?

Short answer....

Yes its an issue.

Longer answer it can induce nanners (which are male glands) and can pollinate itself and any other plants in the area.

It can also induce revegging. Which will crash your flowering party as well.

Depending on how big it is. My buddy got himself a refrigerator box and a couple of bricks to hold it down.

Complete darkness regardless of what lights are on. Only issue is waking up super early to remove the box.

Hope this helps.

It's a large "dust to dawn" light that covers the whole side of the yard, like a half-acre or so and we can't really control it (there's no light switch for it). The top tips of the plants are getting the light on the outskirts of the beam. The majority of the plant is in the dark.

I have to put my plant under a tarp at night because we have a street light in front of our house and even though its dark out back there’s still enough light to through my plant out of whack.

I got tyred of outside light sources messing my baby up. I invested in a 80x80x200 tent for less then £70/$60ish.. It's worth getting a tent as you can control the environment and achieve total darkness

Yeah unfortunately it sounds like that will definitely cause you problems.

May be wise to listen to these guys and invest in a nice hoop house/GH with a light deprivation solution...

Dang, their whole life they're dealt with this problem. A tarp would work, I just need to set the alarm for 7 a.m. to take them out and put them in the sun. Seems like a lot of work with 5 plants, but they're in flower now so I'm on the downhill stretch.

I meant to say "dusk" not "dust"
Hah, didnt even notice...

You say theres no light switch... Is it your light? What about covering the light with a trash bag or something if you dont really need it, or can you adjust it a little seeing as you said it was right on the edge there, shouldnt have to move it too far.

Since that trailer park moved in next door, we installed this light and it's at the top of the house- way too far to put a bag over and would defeat the purpose of the light. It's also outside my bedroom side of the house so I can keep an eye out. Tonight imma look around the property and see if I can move them to a dark spot. I hate that I have to get up extra early to move them to sun, but I'm in flower so I don't have a whole lot of time left with them anyway. Thanks for the suggestions!

You don't have to get up extra early. I've been tarping mine and the wife usually gets up earlier than me so takes the tarp off around 9am and it goes back on at about 9pm. Haven't even been tarping it lately and it's been getting down to 40F at night. She don't seem to mind and is budding up nicely. Growing in the ground so can't move it. 4.5' tall and not stretching hardly at all. Will be putting clear plastic around that frame for when it snows or we get frost. Heater and fan inside it on the real cold nights as it has about 5 - 6 weeks to go yet. Hi-CBD girl with less than 1% THC.

That's what I'm growing is the high CBD strain. Can't help but wonder how good the weed would be as smoked but I made a commitment. I put mine in a canopy at night. So far, I've been able to move them.

Once they get to the point of not being able to be moved you can build a enclosure for them out of PVC industrial strength velcro and tarps.

Would cost about $50 and allow for easy removal of the tarp while the pvc can remain in place. Sun goes down. Throw tarp on. Sun comes up pull it off.

Easier than destroying buds trying to move it.

Smoking is the most wasteful way to consume your meds. I only toke small amounts of THC strains in my pipe but the hi-CBD ones I make into fresh infused cocobudder. Just a light trim to take off anything without sugar on it and into the freezer it goes fresh off the plant. So much easier than trimming, slo-drying and curing buds for bag appeal.

Most of any THC plants I grow now are going to be made into RSO so other than the finest colas I won't be wasting time and effort on trimming much. I'm going to be using naphtha to make the RSO so the buds don't even need to be dry. Any moisture that gets into the mix will just sit on the bottom and be easy to get rid of.
