Oh sorry I forgot to mention that neem oil diluted with some water and washing up liquid does good to deter pests and you just spray it on the leaves and your job is done although you might think it sounds stupid.

Can either be used on buds with trichs already? Or should they just be applied to all other plants as a preventative since this one has about 30 days left

BWG707 has your solution well in hand. Use that. Anything with "spinosad" works well. DO NOT USE "imadacloprid" (from Bayer)! It can bring about a bad case of mites!
Be sure to spray the surface of the media down too!
Neem lovers only create bugs tolerant to it and that brings on MORE problems as it does not work 100% even with multiple applications!

Are you in veg or flower? We had some thrips on this current crop during veg. Sprayed a compound with spinosad heavily 2-3 times a day. The thrips were gone in less then a week. Took the plants a few days, maybe a week to recover but we're 5 weeks into flower now and things are going great.

If you are in flower you may be in trouble.. You don't want to spray on your buds.

You do NOT have to spray it heavily 2-3 times a day (OCD problem?)! Kills through both contact and ingestion action, but is much more effective if insects ingest it. Apply when small larvae are feeding on plant surfaces and cover surfaces completely. A second application may be necessary a few days later if additional larvae hatch out after the first application. Follow label directions for mixing and application for maximum effectiveness and safety. That's from another site and sorry I forgot to get the name for the due credit.
I would apply once, getting a good coating on the leaves and repeat again 7 days later. If you feel you need to do it again. follow up the second with a third application 5 days after that one!

Spinosad does not react badly to humans or their common pets like cats and dogs. In fact it is used as an oral solution to fleas! It is a natural product and is considered as organic in many countries! Thanks to wiki for that tidbit and for the following!

Trade names include Comfortis and Trifexis® (which also includes milbemycin oxime) (both brands treat adult fleas on pets; the latter also prevents heartworm disease), and Natroba (for human head lice.) It is commonly used to kill thrips and other pests on flowering marijuana plants a few weeks before harvest without harming the flowers or making them harmful if smoked.[SUP]

Horse shit! spinosad is a natural compound and is safe to use in flower with no ill effects to humans if used before the final wash (even on your buds)! Spinosad is given orally to your cats and dogs as a flea killer! "Comfortis is a beef-flavored tablet you give to your dog or cat to kill fleas and prevent flea infestations for one month." Credit to the Comfortis web site!
You do NOT have to "heavily" spray your plant 2-3 times a day (OCD problem?)!!!!

Apply the spray to cover the plant completely. Repeat in 7 days. If you feel the need for a re-treatment - do it again 5 days later!
