[h=3]Pest Control[/h]Marigold's strong odor works to repel most insects, making the ancient flowering herbal a natural insect repellent. Marigolds repel mosquitoes, as well as aphids and other insects that can attack vegetable plants. One thing to keep in mind. though, is that not all insects stay away. In dry, hot weather, spider mites can kill marigolds. Grasshoppers also are oblivious to the pungent odor that other insects avoid.

Speaking of deer some spots I scoped out have heavy deer. Will deer mess with plants a foot tall? Or should I seriusely consider a deer repellent?

will marigolds repel deer?

Sad to say no. I know Pepper, my avitar will work! Really My favorite way to get rid of deer from my garden and flowers is to sprinkle dog hair around the edges of the garden. The deer never even get close enough to actually sniff the hair - evidently, it's the smell that keeps them away from the garden.

People say it works but I had a plant eaten by something and I poured my urine around the peri mature. I would think coyote urine might work better.

Idk I'd like to see other more experience growers opinions.

Deer are difficult to keep away. I spray with a combo of milk, egg, garlic, hot pepper & neem oil. My most frequent problem is the stalk being chewed at the base. Last year a had one 5' tall with chicken wire 2 feet high around it..... gnawed at the base. :cuss: I think it was some kind of rodent (chipmunk or gofer) maybe.

If you were going to start some plants inside and let them grow for a month when would you flip the lights to 12/12 to sex them. Would you do it after 2 weeks? Or wait till the last week? I know this isn't the best way to do it considing stress but if you had to do it that way how would you do it?
I've always been able to identify their sex at the 5th or 6th set of nodes. Depending on how healthy it grows you should be able to in a month.

I don't spray the buds so I haven't noticed any taste. Once the plants get really big the deer usually only due minor damage. I think I'm going to use a 5' tomato cage this year, & hang hot peppers around.

I use a similar spray. Just garlic and pepper though. I know stuff like liquid fence has egg in it how exactly do you incorporate egg into the mix? My major problems are with chipmunks or some kind of rodents too.

I mix the garlic powder and cayenne in water then strain the solids out with a coffee filter. I've been looking for a way to get better solubility and make it last longer and someone suggested I try oil rather than water. I'm not sure about that though, I feel like they may actually be attracted to oil.

I like the idea of a cage.
