Why no conclusive side by side defoliation topics

i defoliate for air flow, i lollipop, i remove fan leaves for penetration, ive had plants stunt so bad that they produced squat, im talking a five foot plant ten feet around. Took a month to recover. I know they are there for a reason. But i cant stop, if i see an ugly leaf its gone. I didnt go hard this round and am happier letting them die off, yes its ugly but they have grown for millions of years without defol. How can i know more than the creator.

This? I was close on the name

Thanks Wattzup, interesting thread but I am thinking more indoor grow. It seems like it would be a simple exercise to take a few clones and try a different defoliation technique on each but I still can't find a side by side (indoor) which has a happy ending ie: conclusive proof. Then again as some have already said it may be strain dependent.

This article which was within the thread you posted is very informative. After reading the article read the comments some great points and opinions there's pages of them and interesting responses to the comments. This was a great statement, I think by the author of the article.

"But when I hear defoliation, I take it to mean removing leaves, any leaves...whether that is 1 leaf or 20.

Since 'defoliation' is now a practice with quite a few growers, it has become an event

'defoliation' = removing most fan leaves in a single event.

When I think of pruning, I think of removing suckers, pinching tops, cutting branches. Redirecting growth"

If you aren't hitting 1 gram per watt you need to improve your growing skills, not an insult. I've pulled more leaves off some plants, than people have on their entire plants. The amount of defoliation depends on the plant.

WHAT? GPW is a poor measure of ability!
I've gotten over 4 - SOG kills GPW and that's just a style of growing.....BTW as soon as you say "Not an insult" it becomes one.

Defoliation is not a way to massive gains. Rather minimal really. It creates smaller denser buds that increase yield by weight, not bud size.
It looses bag appeal for a few more grams of yield? Why?
Lets get clear here.
Define Defoliate? It is NOT pruning everything off but the main buds - That's cropping for total main bud size...
Defoliation is the removal of leaves from all over the plant.
I don't care if it's done at a certain time or if it's only some of the "leaves".

It is not productive to remove food factories from plants. As the plant fruits!

To me it would appear that the quest isn't finished in these comparisons, BECAUSE THEY FAIL to prove their point and simply stop posting on it.

BOOM DONE!

GPW is a poor measurement I agree. The standard of a good grow has been 1 GPW, it's not an end all measurement, but if you are consistently hitting less than that then you have room to improve. I definitely do.

I feel a little sick when I see some pics of how badly people butchered their plants...sure, they usually appear to recover quickly, but at what cost? Regrowing all of their leaves is obviously taking energy away from bud growth. Some defoliation is undoubtedly good for basic grow hygeine, induced resistance, air flow, etc. But please don't shave every fan leaf off your plant!! They are there for a reason.

I have been continuously growing for around 5 years now. First few grows I didn't really defoliate and things went OK. I then started to defoliate every grow. My grows haven't improved as much as I would have liked taking my 5 years experience into consideration. I occasionally get 1grm per watt but not very often, maybe I am just not a great grower, some of my grows have been quite bad.

I have tried most defoliation technique's. Complete strip at 3 weeks, handful of leaves every few days, and last grow or 2 the Kyle Kushman technique, etc etc.

Seen many topics on side by side defoliation vs non defoliation but the topics all seem to cut short and not finish.

I am often tempted not to defoliate (just lollipop) but all I can see at 2 weeks into flower is a sea of leaves some as big as my head and I can't hold myself back.

Any conclusive evidence (non scientific just experienced growers real life results with clones) that defoliation helps or hinders.
You can take a few off here and there ,but don’t take very many. If you see the top of a limb getting blocked by a shade leaf i would take it off of there.Don’t ever pull to many they need those leaves to pull light and the plant needs the sugar in the leaves!

This topic never fails to entertain. Strain, medium, health, light and your ability to read your plants will dictate your success. I am voting for proper usage.

Why does everyone forget we remove "Nature" and her predatory herbivores from our grows? The response to such is called defensive growth among all the old school commercial farmers I know.

To each their own. I'm behind you. Yet I'll do this every time I see the opportunity.002.jpg

I would definitely say yes unless you got 50 plants. Some of them leaves are just babies.Just take one here and there. I lollipop mine just pull off a leaves that are blocking a main growing tips. Never leaves this small though. You have stunted them plants. Now they are going to have to use energy to make enough leaves to live.Instead of being able to use those leaves for energy to bud!

It was just one plant. I hope it makes it. :o
