You cannot overwater coco

10 seeds have been placed in each of the 4 different substrates:
- Cocos 100%
- Cocos + 30% Perlite
- Cocos + 50% Perlite
- Hydroton/Vermiculite/Perlite Mix

Handwatered daily tapwater ppm 192 0.5, temps 25-27°C, removed drain immediately.

Pure Cocos drowns Cannabis sprouts by 100%. And they say it always contains oxygen.… so how can this be?!?! Fuck theory!! Here is the proof instead.

This was not a single test but this pic is from the final test where I decided for fairness to take, not knowing in advance how it would turn out.

Same seedbatch was tested several hundreds they'll sprout consistently. Especially in my mix even with RO.

Problem with the Coco/Perlit mixes is u still get many places where a young root is going to drown. So some thrive some go. I mean seriously... maybe *inside* a grain of coco is some O2 retained but that's not where the root is.

You keep the coco 'moist' at that stage. Half a cup to a cup of fert solution. Couple of spoonfull runoff. Every other day. Or everyday. Don't let it dry out.

You don't start flooding it until after the 6-8 node. In it's final pot. Then you start power pouring. Once the roots are developed enough to take it.

Im not sure what your experiment is trying to accomplish (?).

I treat coco like soil in the early days, i wet the coco plant the sprouted seed then I don't have to touch it for the next 5/7 days, I then use a syringe to feed a small amount around the plant stem, the 1st I'll see run off is 10/12 days after sprouting.

I don't believe you can over water coco?

More people have issues growing in coco than any other medium........if you dial it in, explosive growth but for most, issues continue to creep up.

I start out in pure coco every time if I’m going from seed, I don’t have 100% germ rate but it’s definitely around 80% success for me.

I don’t know anybody that would water daily if their seed hasn’t sprouted it’s no wonder the coco seed drowns, if it does sprout it probably dampens off shortly after.

I'm not really sure what this post is getting at. Is this a test just for science or are you trying to grow? Like are you picking a method to fine tune or like sarcastically talking shit?... Help me out here

Why would you water something daily that hasn't even sprouted? LOL

You don't feed coco daily or multiple times per day until the roots fill the pot. I have almost 100% germ rate in straight coco. I plant seeds, water until runoff and then don't water again until they have sprouted.

exactly. just that this isn't advocated on many official "coco 4 cannabis" guides - as they say "You cannot overwater coco"...

Then what is killing the sprouts?

And there are ppl watering coco 3* daily, so 1 time daily isnt that excessive to begin with... the coco guides state "when u water u bring in fresh oxygen to the roots" but this doesnt seem to save the runts from dying.

But the Hydroton Mix I could water 24/7 - it doesn't matter how often, as long as the drain goes to waste.

So it's not possible to overwater hydro, but u see the grave & significant difference of excess moisture in coco vs hydro.

I don’t know anybody that would water daily if their seed hasn’t sprouted it’s no wonder the coco seed drowns, if it does sprout it probably dampens off shortly after.
I remember a growreport here where this actually happened, but at the end of the day, it's a test of material to see how much wetness a young cannabis root can tolerate - apparently not much.

lol just where have I been sarcastic?

Im still vegging them bi-pedal plants:

(please excuse the mess, past surgery, a friend could only give water. at least they happy.)

1 plant 2 rootballs - the power of innovation - see it here 4 the very first time :bigjoint:

You can definitely overwater seeds in coco. You’re essentially drowning them when repeatedly watering them without any of the moisture being absorbed by a root system.

I water my flowering plants 2x a day and they are in straight coco. When people say “you can’t overwater coco” they are referring to a plant with an established root system. I think you’re taking the phrase too literally.

Just because it is recommended that an adult should drink at least 8 8oz glasses of water a day does not mean that same rule applies to newborns. This is basic common sense.

It's true though, you hear this "you can't overwater coco" mantra repeated so often it's easy for a total noob to get confused and start overwatering from day one. Not everyone does the amount of research they should before diving into coco. I don't blame them for being confused, the phrase you see repeated is "you can't overwater coco" not "you can't overwater plants with an established root system in coco".

so what's ur take on if u irrigate but the plant cant clear the water (lights out, sick plant) from its rootzone, so the roots sit in water/coco for a prolonged time... it may not kill it but stress could still throttle.

For example in soil my personal habit is to give water before lights on/ in the mourning just to prevent this.

Precisely. Hang around the newb or plant problem section for a little time one gets to see this type of thinking. Sporting droopy plants.

Thanks for the clarification? :-|
I've stuck the top back in the soil to root it. It's about time to check in on any success... :blsmoke:

My irrigation is set to run 30 mins after the lights come on (plants take time to wake up) and 6 hrs into lights on so that the coco has the lowest moisture content during lights out.

So does the problem with over watering seedlings in coco really have to do with over watering or excessive nutrients or not enough nutrients? because the roots can develop when always under water or being constantly misted(hence why misting frequency is higher with aeroponics until root development) So is it the over watering of 195ppm water(alot of ca and mg)? Some people hit their clones once a day with 1.6ec but it would be deadly for the plant at 2-4 times. But water is basically the main ways a plant gets its o2. and o2/carbon and hydrogen(by product of water) are the three elements most needed for the plant, the macro macros. would it be as bad with frequent watering's at 0ppm? Sorry High af

So it's conclusive then? You can water a well established plant in Coco as much as wanted but it drowns baby plants. Makes sense...

Yes, op stated 195ppm which I'm assuming is tap water which is mostly cal mag/ metals so in coco with its cation exchange I can see multiple feedings at that stage leading to serious excess of cal mag
