Hello I was just reading a thread and ppl were talking about how important ph is. I went through the whole PH worry phase where I tested my ph every day , then my brother who lives in grass valley California and has brought me to his friends house and showed me 100,000$ crops right in front of my face and every big time grower I talked to laughed at me when I said I test PH. They said that only newbies test ph and that if you really want a hardy plant then it will acclimate to wjatever ph u have. Unless u feed it battery acid . Anyone else not PH anymore ?

That's bs,if your running hydro it's a must, them noobies must be in soil,I've met a few people who like to brag about not using ph,it all comes down to been lazy...
not only lazy but so,e people happen to be in an area where there current ph level work well, my artesian well here in maine is up around8.5 and I don't put it anywhere near my plants, when I lived in the very lower parts of maine my town tap water worked fine, every situation and every strain is different,

Good luck with a 100,000$ hydro grow lol, but yea the growers I know have been living off of pot for 40 years and never once have tested ph so I guess they must be lazy, even tho I doubt any of u have grown nearly as much as these guys have. The new age growers just think they know everything cause they harvested a pound in there backyard

For indoor, hydro is easier to scale up than soil. Have you ever carried a "100,000 dollar grow"s worth of soil inside? (not saying I have, but I know that soil doesn't come out f the faucets like water does). When I used to grow with soil (small grow), I would get it all over the carpets, inside the sink basins, in the bathtub, everywhere! It was very cumbersome to maintain. Dirt is very dirty.

Not only is hydro easier than soil for large indoor operations, it's cheaper!

I run a hydroponic set up and i just don't bother,if the water is good drinking water then no need .But a ec truncheon is a must you will find that not useing one will not make any difference to the yeild has long has the water is good like i said above not ph these once

Not one of my grows are ph for the last 3/4 year and that is two house moves, where the was a slight ec change in water but not much

add air ring to the bottom of the pots if growing in soil ,have air comeing from a compressor if your doing a few or a fish tank pump if you doing a couple make a big difference

I don't "use ph" except to bring the high ph of my tap water down initially. That's definitely a result of being lazy. I like to call it efficient instead though. Provide a balanced soup with moderate amounts of nutrients and the ph will remain stable enough till I need to refresh or top of the rez.

That's funny, because I don't use my TDS meter anymore, but I still use the pH meter until dialed in with a certain water + nute formula.

DWC is particularly hard with 400-500ppm water, and figuring out how much pH down to use requires a pH meter. When dialed in, I will remember the amount of pH down and just add it without measuring afterwards.

try it with out the ph and you might find it runs smoother than normal.i think its like anything you just get to know what the water is like,

This is a tough argument, because nitric acid (pH down) is an ingredient to my newest formula. It's factored in to the nutritional value already.

A lot of premixed formulas will already have "pH up" or 'pH down" mixed in as part of the recipe.

I guess it's hard to explain why I just won't do that.. Nitric acid is built in to my formula for hard water! Using this formula and my tap water, you shouldn't need to check pH. I just needed the meter to figure out to balance the formula!

(actually, i don't really need the pH pen anymore now that it's balanced, but I need it if I ever want to alter the formula)

Edit: what I'm trying to say is that I need the pH pen to design the nutrients.

I don't see how a lack of insight is going to help run things smoother. While I hardly control my pH, I obviously reached that point my measuring it many times, continuously, in the first place.

DWC is particularly hard with 400-500ppm water.
Damn... never even heard someone having that high ppm water, it's the ppm I use in total through the entire run (my tap is 180-200). Considering you are mixing your own nutes you can obviously adjust to it better, and that nitric acid will make some Ca available, but why no RO filter?

If I remember correctly (I'm a stoner), the purpose of mix 17 was to ditch the RO filter. The tap is free calcium, I just have to use a lot less calcium nitrate, more potassium nitrate, and include nitric acid. With RO water, you'd actually need to add pH up for mix 15. RO filter is more complicated and more expensive than the alternative.

why no RO filter?
