World Of Hempy

By spun glass I was talking about the growstones, I believe they are made of recycled glass.

All the best.
Yes they are, and I did not know that, I knew they had glass properties.
It would make sense as they are very very light in weight. I use them with Perlite last grow and am going to eliminate the Perlite in this grow.

Thanks for the info,

I found this very informative, I now remember reading this when the product was first released, was impressed, but wanted to let others try it first.

I have taken two cups of Growstone and two cups of water to check the absorptive characteristics. Pics to follow.

.Manufacturing Process

The Growstone Eco-engineering Process

Growstone’s patented manufacturing process takes waste glass from the landfill and recycles it into customizable products ranging from substrates for advanced hydroponic growing systems to soil amendments to improve soil structure and texture.

The first step in the process is crushing the glass bottles into small pieces then into an extremely soft powder. It’s so soft, it feels like flour. That’s because the average particle size of the “flour” is one-fifth the size of a human hair.

The “flour” or soda lime silica glass powder is the main component (up to 98%) of Growstone materials. Natural foaming agents and additives customize the material’s properties for different applications. Customization can create a material characterized by open or closed pore structure, with higher or lower water holding capacity and air-filled porosity, harder or softer. In all cases, Growstones rigid foam does not breakdown over time and can be re-used.

After the material has been blended for the specific product application, it is dropped on the conveyor belt that feeds the kiln.

The material is then fired in a large kiln. The kiln can be heated either from the methane harvested from the landfill, or by using natural gas. The blend rises as it bakes and bubbles of gas released during the backing process follow a torturous path as they escape, creating a network of pore cells in the material creating a rigid and highly porous foam with the desired physical properties. Growstones physical characteristics can be customized for different products and product applications. The cell structure, cell size, particle size and particle size distribution can be controlled as needed.

Once done baking, slightly more than an hour, the material comes out of the kiln on the conveyor belt to cool down. As soon as it reaches room temperature, the product cracks into smaller chunks. These chunks are then crushed into the desired sizes.

Since our production facility is right in the landfill, no long distance transport of raw materials is necessary, saving thousands of gallons of fuel and significantly reducing our carbon footprint. The manufacturing process also does not use water at any stage, so the water footprint directly associated with the production of Growstones is zero. The results are high performance, chemical free, recycled, and non-toxic soil amendments and hydroponic substrates.

Growstones are as good for your plants as they are for the planet.

Ok, I took two cups of Growstone and two cups of water, poured the water over the stones and let them sit for about 5 minutes.

After the five minutes I pour the water off the stones into the measuring cup and let it drain for 2 minutes.

Results, the Growstone retained one cup of the water. Do not have any course Perlite or I would try that. If someone has some and would be willing to replicate this test I would be very interested in the results. Please post the brand of Perlite you use and if it is course or very course.

Thanks,

I have 2 female og kush seed that I'd like to pop to go along with my main grow. My main grow has a flowering time of about 70 days (HSO blue dream and trainwreck)

I would like one cola sticks from the og kush. I only have a small space so this is about as much as I can cram in. I am thinking of using 2 litter bottles as hempy buckets. To get nice stick style colas how much veg from when the seed first pops?

I have used pop bottles on a few different grows, so here's a few pic's of what I have grown with 2L bottles.....also like one colas gals

it appears that the end result tends to vary with conditions and strains, but 2L pop bottles are quite versatile for many situations

I've got coarse perlite 'bout the same size, I'll run the same experiment sometime this wk.

Hempy SOG is my prime grow method. The best way is to use clones for more uniform growth. Uniform means utilizing the extra light afforded by SOG.

Again I use rooted clones so it may somewhat differ but I flip to 12/12 after about two weeks after my clones root. Enough time for the clones to establish roots in container and a small amount of growth.

It will also vary on strain. If your OG is Indica dom then you can maybe get away with another week or two of veg. When I use hybrids or Sativa dom (which og kush originally is) I flower asap once roots are set.

It's my favorite way to grow! I highly recommend choosing a mother from your seeds so you can have uniform plants all of the same quality and pedigree. No surprises and unlimited plants! (Cheaper.)

Good luck! Let me know if you need anything else.

Cool Watt,
Look forward to the results.

After doing the test the other day I am considering upping my ratio of Growstone to coco. Have been doing 75/25 coco to perlite with some grow stone. Maybe do a 60/40 coco/Growstone. We shall see. May go to the coco site and ask that question.

thanks guys. My og is meant to be indica dom (dinafem seeds) so I'll give it a fling. I need a night time weed as getting home from work I don't really like Sativa (even though it is my favorite overall). My Blue dream and Trainwreck are going to be mainlined for 8 colas and then I hope to have a small OG kush growing in any spare space.

here are my current girls. Trainwreck came out a twin and therefore is growing slower. Day 15 of veg. Just pushed my nutes up to 75% strength. See if they can take it. I am going to put these two into smart pots. I want to try hempy so I am doing that with a small side grow.

So I ran the perlite water retention experiment. 2 cups of coarse recycled perlite. Added 2 cups water. Now the perlite is at a disadvantage in the test because it floats, so I had to hold it down for the soak,

pertliteriu.jpg
I drained off just short of 1 1/2 cups. So the perlite retained a half cup, which is half of what the growstones held.

So Watt, you think that increasing the amt. of Growstone would allow for decreased watering frequency?
You would think so, but I think we need to do the same 2 cup test on coco. I have a feeling it's going to hold more than the growstones. We add perlite to coco for drainage and to retain more air. That's why I use the mixed coco with the chunks in it, so it holds more air and its ability hold more water could be a winning combination. There is no real way for a home grower to measure the O2 in the medium, so we're working with assumptions and best guesses. All we can do is observe and see if the changes we make really make a difference. Now I'm curious about using straight growstones instead of straight perlite, due to the shape of the growstones you know there will be gaps between the nuggets and will hold lots of air. So after that rambling to answer your question "My Guess" would be that growstones used to cut coco will not decrease the watering frequency, but in the straight growstone vs straight perlite I think it could reduce the watering frequency.

I did the 2 cup experiment on my mixed coco. The coco could have used a soak longer than 5min to attain it's max saturation. But I stuck to the same rules. I was very surprised when I drained it off and got a full cup. Straight coir might be different, but it looks like the grow stones and coco are on the same level with water retention.

@gr865 Maybe you should run one bucket with all growstone and cap the top inch or 2 with coco, clay pellets or soil would be my choice. I would think that the growstones would wick and lift water from the rez at least as good as perlite does.

Watt, I will be putting some beans in water to soak next Monday to start another grow. Prior to that I am going to make a mix of 60/40 coco/growstone, plug the drain hole and fill the bucket to max. I will then remove my drain plug, see previous post about my drain plugs, and see what I get for retention. I should get 50% retention.
I do plan on planting directly into the 4 gallon Hempy as I did last grow, really like this method as the I believe the roots reach the reservoir faster.

good to see you back shaggn....I have run 5 different strains of Crop King auto-fem's and have some disappointments along the way.

Had issues with the Revolver and Early Miss not being true auto's and required 12/12 to flower....then had one that was male, and the Jack Herer is loaded with seeds. The Candy-cane and Dwarf Low Flyer have been decent....so maybe it's just their auto's that are the issue

cheers...let's us know how your strains work out
