Cheap and Cheerful DIY using Citizen cobs

Hey, I was planning on running 5 Citizen CLU-048 1212's 3500k 36v on an HLG-240-1400.

Will that setup work if I have it on full blast?
Whats the most efficient way to run those cobs?
If I only use 180 watts of my 250 watt driver is that considered inefficient or is it just like extra space that I could add more cobs on to later?

well I found it on amazon.ca out of US but wont be here until the 23rd.

I will be looking at cobs and drivers with no wire and cant find 20g solid core anywhere in this damn country.

Tinning stranded wire may be an option for you but it takes more work but it is an option if you are in a bind.

My 2 cents worth. They use that kind of wire for thermostats, door bells, etc. Maybe a building supply place eh?

what about theese? are they good?

i have 2x hlg mean well 185c..1050a
and 10x citizen clue 048 1212.. 3500k
each cob about 37w..

around 370w from wall right now..

grow tent 120x120x200..

i was planning to boost my light very soon with some 4-5 1825 citizen cobs..(better then cree i guess right now)
and same driver..or maybe hlg240 mean well

at first i was planning 3x hlg mean well 185c..1050a
15x citizen clue 048 1212.. 3500k
around 555w

but i had money only for 2/3 of that plan..and some friend told me that even if i had money for that setup, that wont beat 600w hps..
i dont know if he is right...but the price of 1825 isnt that high right now..

any ideas?

Dont the Citi's do really well when driven hard? If you ran your cobs at 2100a you'd beat a 600w hps pretty easily I think.

yeah, but wouldnt that give me much more heat and lower efficiency?

i wouldnt change those drivers I already have and all those stuff on which I already spent my money.

You're getting more heat if you add more light, you cant avoid that. You should play around with the calculator the guys use. You will lose some efficiency, but not too much I suspect.

hi. wondering where someone can get 3x clu058 1825 3000k 70cri, 3x clu058 1825 3500k 80cri, 3x clu058 1825 4000k 90cri, (54v) delivered to ireland
ive got the last 2- i cant get the first (3000k 70 cri) without ordering 20 of them. if you could make do with 3000k 80 cri for that first chip i have all 3 in stock

it's gotta be rated for 300 volts or it's a Fire hazard
that garden wire/doorbell low voltage stuff has candle wax like plastic for a covering
use stranded if you can't find it tin the ends

I use themostat wire from homedepot (tho most of my builds use 2 conductor as im wiring in parallel)

it is CMR/CL2R rated and printed right on the jacket. if you look up that wire it is 300V rated

So, this is my first cob build, but not my first DIY light. I built to a modest budget, and chose Citizen over Vero 29s after crunching the numbers and realizing Citizen is way ahead of Bridgelux at the moment, likely because they are a generation ahead right now.

These are a minimalist design, meant to be easy to build in modular chunks, with aluminum angle, pre-drilled heatsinks, and hand tools.

The parts for one lamp, not including screws and wire:

4x Citizen CLU048-1818 $100
1x Meanwell HLG-120H-C700B $52
4x Mechatronix 9980 Xtra heatsinks $38
4ft 3/4 x 1/8 aluminum angle $10

Total with CLU048-1818: $200

Draws 160W at the wall, ~167lm/W @ 3500k

Same build with CLU048-1212 would be $150, and ~160lm/W. 1212 is a great deal, if it was easily available. It isn't. This type of build would work fine with anything smaller than a 3590, like a CXB3070 or Vero 29.

I wanted one cob per square foot, so with the heatsinks that ended up being two 16" and two 12" lengths of aluminum angle, in an H shape like so:

Honestly, single rivets and a dab of epoxy would have been just as effective as two screws in preventing slippage. I just wanted to be able to dismantle if I forgot anything, but it all went together fine.

Then the heatsinks, which I attached with two thread rolling M4 bolts each. The holes are already drilled in the heatsink for a different cob holder. Test fitting the driver as well. The HLG-120H is a perfect fit for the 12" spacing.

And the hard part was over at that point. I only snapped one bolt head, which is pretty good for me.

Skipping to the finished light, I used solid core wire. If this was something that would be flexed a lot or taken apart and put back together a lot, no way. But I wanted something that stayed neat without being fussy, so it was perfect here.

Editing to add, I forgot to mention the wire routing holes were sanded smooth to prevent wear on the insulation. Alesh shows safer and potentially neater routing aids here https://www.rollitup.org/t/cheap-and-cheerful-diy-using-citizen-cobs.909460/#post-12606160

Love these cob holders. I ordered the Ideal to try as well, but they were fiddly as hell, and these allow an Angelina to attach directly.

The only other interesting bit is the switch. A bit of magic with some resistors and a DPDT on-on-on, and et voila:

Basically just putting one or two 24k resistors in series, using crap I had around the house. The 100% setting is an open connection between the dim wires, so it runs about 10W over the 150W it pulls with a 100k resistor.

And that is about that. Some more pictures:

i know nothing, very little about led and can not build,, i just bought 2 of the go green 100 watt 2 cob citizen..usint the clu48 chips.. how long have u been growing w/ the citizen's? are they 4000k ? can u please let me know your opinion on the go greens i just ordered? whats the difference other than the kelvin values of the cree cxb 3070,cxb3590, and the citizen chips? is one better than the other if so why? sorry so many questions,, ive been growing for over 20 years, 20 yrs with hps and mh, then switched over to cmh a few yrs ago,,very happy w/ the switch,,now im interested in the led but really know nothing about them.. ive been told u get what u pay for so the higher the price the better the led?? imo the led that runs colored isnt as good as the white light produced by the latest led's like the 3070,3590, and citizen,,,not to mention its easier to see in the grow room,,not orange or red tinted light???is this correcvt?
