do argue just to do so ?
SMOGS in Cali are merely revenue collection demonstrated by the aforementioned freight liners and the CADMV.

Currently, smog inspections are required for all vehicles except diesel powered vehicles 1997 year model and older or with a Gross Vehicle Weight (GVWR) of more than 14,000 lbs, electric, natural gas powered vehicles over 14,000 lbs, motorcycles, trailers, or gasoline powered vehicles 1975 and older.

How's the smog level in counties that don't require smog inspections like Lake and Humboldt?

I would have this one with you IRL. The freight liners burn what for fuel again?
For those who would actually like to know, the vast majority of air pollution in and around Long Beach is generated by diesel engines in the trucks at the port, and coming and going from it. The ships themselves contribute only a tiny fraction of the total.

Electric trucks with swappable batteries are coming.

That's why I took a snip from the CADMV above.

The diesel/electric train hybrids are a good solution that could have been implemented a LONG time ago. It baffles me why these Prius drivers are so proud of their Rube Goldberg machines.

On a side note, the "perfect electric" is coming soon......soon.......soon.......we've been hearing this since around, what; 1920?

Stop by the Tesla Motors website. It may not be 'perfect', nothing ever is, but what that car doesn't do, you don't need.

oh ok. I thought you were saying smog was not real.
every little bit can help. or just let every car go unchecked ?
It's tears on a river and really a stupid system going on in Cali. @ttystikk identified the main polluters and its not the average poor person that has to smog their hoop ride.

I can't replace the engine in a Samurai with a more efficient, less polluting one. Only the OEM options. A Chevy Vortec V-6 will drop right in with minimum tweeks, but its no bueno according to CADMV in LA.

One Honda, probably not. Every car in the LA Basin? Another story.
The story is revenue collection. I hope you're right one day and all cars are SMOG exempt but can you tell me what the car in Shasta county contributes to LA smog?
