Why all the arguments over LED vs HPS ?

I'm in northern Alberta about a 6 hour drive north of Edmonton and without HID lights I'd need added heat in the grow room damn near 12 months of the year so I wouldn't save a dime on power using LEDs and have to pay a bunch up front to get them. You rarely see NEED for heat being discussed when talking about what lights to buy.

When I tried to explain how I do it the vertical cob goodness crowd never stopped tryin to tell me I was wrong.

I save 400 gallons of propane per year with a couple of light bulbs here in the (mid-north).

$130 in light bulbs every 10 months and I save over $800 in propane per season.

It's my first time reading about someone needing a heater 9 months out of 12. My problem would be the opposite.... how to keep temps down in my space ( Southern California)

I'd much rather toss another 400W in there than have to have the heater going to keep it warm enough. I've taken over the spare bedroom upstairs to use as a veg room then when I have enough plants move them downstairs to the grow room. I need two 400W or the 1000 going in there to keep it warm enough even now and the heater has to kick in during the dark period to maintain 65 - 70F. I like it at 75F during their day.

That's a lot of propane and it's not cheap. I used to deliver propane to oil rigs, pump jacks and homes way up north around Zama City, Alberta. We got natural gas here and it's dirt cheap compared to electricity but I'm not bringing in a gas fitter to install a line in my grow room. lol I am thinking of putting one in myself to run a CO2 generator as there is a capped gas line just outside the room and it's not rocket science. Already ran my own power lines in when I needed more juice in there so what's the dif. In for a dime, in for a dollar and would be a lot cheaper than bottled CO2.

That's the thing @Lola Grows. There's no one solution that works for everyone just like everything else in life. ;)

Lola, if youre looking for decent leds hit up any of the advertisers of the riu led forum:
Timber
Tasty
HLG
I shopped with @CobKits for semi diy (very easy Putting together) and i was impressed, very helpfull, provides a lot of info in his thread and excellent customer service.

I had Tasty already on my list. A rep from timber is helping me out ( thanks to some wonderful guys here on RIU) & Fluence lighting has also been recommended. I'll research a bit on HLG, but I'm kind of leaning towards one of those 3.
Thank you for the suggestions:)

I can run 2 600 hps for 250$... Still doesnt make sense to me for yield comparison...not tryin to argue if u like them thats great....i like the heat....keeps me from runnin heaters 9 months out of the year

How many times do i have to say its not for everyone before you get that its not for everyone? When you have a small grow space and no real way to deal with the heat output of a hps then what? Not everyone lives less than 100 miles from the arctic circle like you. And for the 4th or 5th time that $250 i spend is all i will ever have to spend on that light period, ill have lower electricity cost and no heat to deal with and no bulb replacement. By the end of year 2 i will have spend more than triple for an HPS to fit the same space.

If your goal is to build out a 6x10 grow room where you dont care about electricity have AC and all you care about is growing as much as possible with as low an initial investment as possible then sure go hps, but its not for everyone. If you actually read what very experienced growers have to say you will notice more and more switching from HPS to led, its not a coincidence. The days of blurple where led has inferior product and yeild is long gone. To be honest hps should be dead but some ppl are resistant to any kind of change. If i wanted to run a bulb it would be CMH over hps all day long because its just better.

Some people need bigger lights than what you are using, if you are happy with what you got more power to you, i live in a high plains desert, and i have no problem with handling the heat from over 2kw of HID lights, i also pay .11 cents per kwh during peak hours and .07 cents per kwh during off peak hours ( i run my lights during off peak hours , so i wouldn't ever see much return on investment on my LEDs)

Also i don't see many dispensaries using LEDs and i don't think i will for a long time, DE lights work way better than LEDs in a warehouse type grow.

Finally CMH VS HPS , CMH works GREAT, but it's best for a supplemental lights between HPS lights, not the greatest as a main lighting source because in my opinion(i just finished a CMH/HPS grow using a phillips CDM bulb) the HPS makes bigger buds because the CMH lacks intensity (i think it only makes like 35k lumens and a 600w hps makes 90k)

yes and i said at least 5 times its not for everyone and even said if you have a big space, dont care about electricty ect ect then its a different conversation.

Did you actually read and comprehend what i said? Ill say it differently. Led is amazing for certain circumstances and people its not neccesarily the best choice for every situation. That said in the right situations (like mine) its superior to hps. The hps die hards who refuse to even listen to a discussion are the ones i have issue with because hps is far from a perfect light. At the same time you also have skilled growers with medium/large spaces running led over hps and extremely happy with the results.

As technology improves within a decade hps will be completely dead. It might be LED thats king, it might be some other bulb based light but hps's days are numbered simply because it is a highly inefficient light source.

I use LEDs, i'm not a hps die hard, you just gotta realize the LED market is for small hobby sized grows, they don't work as well as a HPS for larger sized rooms for a multitude of reasons. I highly doubt we will see HPS go away unless LED initial cost goes down substantially and they start offering LEDs that have a better spectrum, i know i am not gonna use my LEDs without using a UV supplemental light, and for larger rooms that's not really gonna work.

There's been enough discussion on the topic. Time to lock and kill this discussion.:fire:
It would be nice to have some actual, real discussion with proof and results. But that may be asking too much I guess? People on here seem awfully pissy considering this is a forum of people interested in marijuana, you'd think it would be a bit more relaxed! Haha.

I have ran gorilla glue #4, white fire og , and golden goat under LEDs and HPS numerous times. What type of information you looking for?

Also ran the white fire og under cmh

I am gonna do a HPS + LED run this upcoming run with my white fire og, to see how that turns out.
Was your setup comparable between CMH, HPS and LED?

Which provided better yields?
How much electricity savings did you see with LED compared to HPS?
How much of a difference in heat did you see?
Which lighting provided better buds from a THC, taste and smell standpoint?

If you were to start over from new, would you go CMH, HPS or LED? And why?

All the usual questions I suppose.

I was trying to edit my response and deleted , sorry bout that, electric savings i use like 450 watts to see a comparable yield to my 600w hps, i use mostly cree older series so i could upgrade and use less, as for heat , lighting sources doesnt really matter 450w of any light is 450w of heat, i still need to exhaust and deal with it, yield wise i think LEDs are the best but for quality i think CMH is the best.

If i could start over and had an unlimited budget i'd probably go with all DE HPS with DE MH between the lights, and build an out building with 12 foot tall ceilings in my back yard , a smartbee controller, and mini split HVAC system (i can't afford that right now but i been planning on either building a green house or grow room outside)

I only have LEDs in a 4x4 tent so i mostly grow with HPS lights , been adding some CMH and LEDs in my main grow room lately, this run i plan to do 2x 600w hps , and 2x 150w cree XTE LEDs

Thank you for the info. I'm looking at setting up a 4x4 tent and have been going back and forth on lighting for quite some time. Still haven't come to a decision and the more I seem to read, the less I feel like I know and the less decisive I feel I've become about my setup.

4x4 is a good area to grow in, you can start with pretty much any type of light , might wanna try to start cheap to figure out how you wanna grow your plants, each person does different methods, i'm an organic guy now but i started as a soil drain to waste guy, tried coco, tried RDWC hydro , for me growing is about experimenting with new things to find out what fits your best and enjoying the process. I just started breeding my plants together, and that's something new and fun for me. I hope you can enjoy it, happy toking bongsmilie
