Do you count flowering from 12/12 switch or when you see pistil hairs?

When I talk about it, or journal new strains it's like this:

- flower time = 12/12
- flowering stage = bud onset

i swear its misinformation for the purpose of sales with breeders and banks.

Q: how long does this strain take?
A: 8 weeks flowering time bud

real answer is bended truth, flower onset to finish = 8 weeks, its 9.5 weeks from flip.

for consumer clarity, those who choose to sell theirs with an 'x' week flowering period after onset should mention that specifically or just fess up and call the average time from flip truthfully.

ie:
A1 strain x weeks flowering period.

or

A2 strain x weeks following bud onset.

generically counted from 12/12 is the answer but sellers are bending the truth for appeal.

But I don't think this was about what breeders say flowering time is. It's about what us growers do.

I said if the plant is mature, showing preflowers, then start count once flip to 12/12.

Either way you do it is fine really. I use the count to know which pheno types finish first. So I can clone and possibly breed the traits I want. Yes check the triches but without a day count what good is that if I want to know which plants finish first.

flowering begins from the day you switch the lights to 12/12...case closed....who the fuck would count from when u see pistels???.... your already 2-3 weeks into flowering when you see pistels... so whats it called when you switch the lights to 12/12?....pre-flower stage??? LOL...when you take into account how long a plants flowering stage is you should include every aspect; the stretch, how long it takes to show signs, how long till harvest, everything... i had an LA CHEESE last grow that showed signs of sex the day after i went 12/12 but flowered as long as the blue venom and other strains...i guess its up to the grower when you consider flowering to start but if your having a conversation about flowering and you start talking about flowering the day you seen pistels ur gonna sound like a full on rookie...
Lol, a know it all of nothing.. So when you pull the 12/12 switch flowers appear magically.. quit listening to other stupid people! Even though this thread is over 5 year old I had to respond

I don't know why people get hung up on flowering times. I'm no expert, but i'm pretty sure plants can't count days or read a date on a calendar. When they're done they're done whether it's 9 weeks or 11 weeks. Anyone ever notice stoners have some strange need to over complicate the simplest things. Most strains are gonna be labeled 8 or 9 weeks so it's far from a science and wouldn't use it as a determining factor for ripeness. I don't pay any more attention to it than I do my box of fruity pebbles saying there's ten servings per box. I get two at best, but truth be told i love fruity pebbles so maybe that's why. Go by the plant not the box.

A plant may be done when its done, but many fertilizers go by week count, and stopping so long before harvest.... Hence reason for needing to knowing how long you have left in flower.

Following a week by week chart is gonna get you nothing but fried plants. Let the plants tell you how long they have left not a fertilizer bottle or calendar. Nute companies have no idea what you're growing so how could they tell you how long and at what strength to feed?

The "weekly" portion of a feeding schedule is more like training wheels for new growers, it can cause some confusion when your strain runs longer than the chart which is why we dont really pay attention to that.

The seasonal changes cannabis goes through is far more important when it comes to feeding.

seedling/veg/stretch & flower can all require different feed levels regardless of what week the chart said, stunted growth, weak environment or simply a long/picky running strain would set you up if you followed the weekly feedings on a chart.

I was wondering how do you count the flowering days.

Do you count from 12/12 switch from 18/6

Or

Do you start counting flowering days when you first see pistils?

I always have started counting the flowering period from when I see the first pistils, however I recently have seen a few people counting flowering period from when they switch from 18/6 to 12/12.

see I figured if I switch from 18/6 to 12/12 then it takes a further 10 days for the plant to show sex and I counted them days as the flowering period, that means I could harvest 10 days early as I counted them 10 days as flowering perid, just when the plant will put its weight on in the last 2 weeks.

I hope that makes sense.

Please Feel free to contribute to the thread & leave comments.

Yep for me when I see pistils OR ...a week after initiation...

From when you call the start of flowering till the end, or pistils to harvest.. ?

Just making conversation no big deal :-)
Yeah me too. :) and trying to learn what’s best as well. Start of flowering technically when I switch to 12/12, but I don’t start counting until a week after I switch. It’s more of a personal thing to give the plant time to adjust to the new time settings which I believe takes about 3-7 days for a plant to actually start showing signs of being flowering mode.

It also I believe is strain dependent as it is with something like fimming/topping plants that don’t want to be topped or fimmed. Each plant will be ready for harvest at different times. The photos I’m running now say 45-50 days so I’ll start checking trichs around that time and expect to add on another week or two or more depending obviously on the growers preference as to where they like their trichs to be at in terms of maturity.

Sounds about right time wise, for me it takes two weeks to show pistils at bud sites and then a futher 7 to get to harvest or close. Overall 9-10 weeks from start of 12/12.

Thanks for sharing :-)
