Never seen anything like this,Interesting grow set up. But im concerned for you and your plants that they will get root bound or block those pipes. Just wondering if you have put any throught into this problem that might occur?

I have a fine mesh glued to the bottom of the bottles, so I don't think I need to worry about clogs.

The roots are another story. I found this setup on a Hydoponics site. They're suggesting it for tomatos and such.
I have a High Times issue some where that had the same setup, but I can't find the thing. It's been around for about 20 years and pops up once in a while in the flotsam and jetsam of life.

I've used to do a lot of outdoor gardening and had lily ponds for a long time but this is the first time I've had the space or help to do this.
So, when I saw The aero garden add, it got the juices flowing. I just found this site recently so most of my hydro research wasn't weed specific. When I started seeing the size of some of the root masses, I did get a little worried, but being the the typical pigheaded, no direction asking kind of guy i am, I'm going with my original set up.

I only plan on letting them get about 3', but if they do get bound,I'll bite the bullet and build something else. I just thought this would be the cheapest way of starting out. The whole setup, with pump and air stone, was under $50

Well, thanks for the interest. I'll probably update with photos in a few days. I had a quick growth spirt when i put them under the sodium, now just filling in. I also noticed that the main stem has gotten much thicker.

On another note.
When I was a kid, my Grandmother had a Pointsetta that she kept for many, many years. When I stayed with her I would help her put it to bed each night and get it up in the morning. It was just a big box with a cloth over it but It was fun helping her and lisrtening to her talk to it and tell it how much nicer it was looking and such, when most of the time,to me, it just looked like a twig with leaves. Then, a month or so before X-mas it would bloom and be as beautiful as ever. Now every morning when I close the babies up tight an when I open them back up to see how they've grown, I think of her.
And that makes me want to just thank everybody. For all the knowledge you share and the help you give. I had forgotten about the joy you can get from just watching something grow.

Here comes the boss. gotta go!:peace:

My mom has put poinsettas in a dark closet for years and has some really huge ones. She starts here plants under floros in her heated garage and plants them early. I'm going up for a visit next week and always look forward to her discussion. My family always make jopkes about her getting raided by the dea. Imagine thier suprise when they find a little ( about 4'6") old lady growing flowers. She lives in a trailer too. 80 x 16. VV

Sounds like my grandma. She was small but tough. When I was about 13 I stuck some pot seeds in one of her plants. She ended up putting them in another pot and had them over a foot tall before her downstairs neighbor told her what they were. I can still picture her chasing me around the kitchen table with a very large wooden spoon.
Ihad to stay away for about a week, which was torture because she also made the best cookies.

Hey Folks,
I'm in day seven of flowering. Everything going smoothly. Still no definite sex yet on any of them. Everything is growing very thick. It's hard not to clip away some of those extra leaves to get more light but it looks like everyone advises against that. I added four CFLs around the edge. There goes another $50, hope it's worth it.

I ordered more of the Technaflora nutes. I was using the formula that came with the starter kit which included the supplements. I was wondering how many different nutes do most people use in hydro grows. Most of the research I did on hydroponics sites, before finding this place, mentioned 3 part formulas. Do most growers use more than three different products in a normal grow, or do you use other additives, other than things you use for problems.

I've been ordering from http://cheaphydroponics.com/ They've been a lot cheaper than other sites on everything I've ordered so far and they ship out of Cleveland OH. Very quick if you're in North East of the US.

I'll throw a few pics up but not much change, just a little thicker and bushier. I also have a pic of my crazy clone factory. These were all started within days of each other. I have no idea what they are. Everything came from a bag of seeds that had been saved over five or six years. I'm letting these grow to learn cloning and I just couldn't kill off the runts. Some of them have turned into nice compact little plants.

Well... If anybody has any suggestions, please let me know

Hello Everybody,
Well I opened the gang up tonight to have a little look and add the new lights.
I placed four CFLs around the base of the plants. They are 42 watt/2700lumen. I saw where Rosemean used them with great results. I mostly want to get some light in the lower parts because the tops are so thick. Does anyone think this will Help?

I think I may have found my first bad boy:evil:
My camera isn't the greatest but let me know what you think.
It's the tallest one of the bunch.

Thanks for looking! Let me know if you have any tips or suggestions.:peace:

So far, two out of eight.

How long can they stay with the females? I know everyone says to get them out as soon as possible, but I want to be sure.

Also any suggestions on the CFLs I added? Do you think they are worth the extra cost?

Please let me know what you think.:peace:

The lights will do better from the tops.
As long as you have good ventilation the cfl's can be within 2" of the plant.

You can also use side lighting.

The lighting coming up from the ground is pointless.
The plants are designed to use the tops of their leaves to soak up light.

Keep up the good work

I guess I'll try to figure out a way to get them up higher on the plants. These big CFLs seem hotter than I thought they would, I was a little worried about getting them too close to the leaves.

Thanks again:peace:

Hey folks,
I think I may have found a flaw with my first grow strategy.
When I decided to start flowering I picked out the tallest and healthiest from the bunch I had started. I had read that males usually grow quicker but didn't think about it that much,
Well, it looks like five out of the eight are male. Still early, but I'm pretty sure.

I still have over a dozen veging, Hopefully I'll have better luck with them.

I also moved up my CFLs. Hopefully that will give me a little more coverage and I'll be able to direct right on the bud sights once I figure out what's what.

Let me know what you think.:peace:

Hello Everybody,

I had five out of eight turn out to be males.
I chopped them last night. I'm hoping the other three are female but they aren't showing any signs either way just yet. I've read that's a good sign.

The males all had massive root systems, six to eight inches out of the sides and bottoms of the cups. The three that are left, while the same size have much smaller root systems.
Is this something anybody else has noticed?

I believe they were all about the same before I started flowering but didn't pay much attention to them at the time.

I placed two more from the veg area into the flowering area. I still have about a dozen vegging and will probaly start cloning in a week or so. I'm hoping there will be a higher percantage of females left, since I didn't do so good picking the first bunch.

Other than five males, everthing else seems to be doing fine.

I just received four litre bottles of BC Grow, BC Bloom, and BC Boost. I guess I'll be doing this for a little while.
At $20.00 a bottle, it was just so much cheaper, I couldn't resist. Also, I ordered Monday morning and they came Tuesday. Talk about quick service.

Well... thanks for looking. I'll have some pics up later in the week and hopefully have some good news on the last three.:peace:

It’ll be three weeks tomorrow that my plants went into flowering. Out of the eight I put in, six were males.

The two females are showing some nice hairs but going slowly. I added one more to my flower room a week ago. No signs yet so I’m hoping for another female. This was the smallest one of the bunch. It stayed small and compact, and the leaves looked more like mint.

I started all the plants seven weeks ago. I still have about a dozen vegging. They range from about 8” – 16”.

I started some clones last night. It was a half assed attempt but they look pretty good this morning.

I pruned the lowest branches on my biggest flowering plant because the bud sights were minuscule. I threw them in the trash and didn’t think about cloning till an hour later. I had some small rockwool cubes soaking so I grab my scissors and pulled them out of the trash. I trimmed them and split the stems, dipped them in cloning gel and popped them in cubes. I made four out of the bunch, put them in a dome and set them in the flowering room for the night.

They looked really sorry and were drooping real bad, but when I pulled them out this morning, three of them were looking nice and perky.

Tonight I’m going to start taking clones from my vegging plants. I’m also going to try bagging a branch on one of them to determine sex.

So, the experiment continues. This is certainly a nerve racking hobby. All you can really do is sit back and watch. I spend 15 minutes a day working on the plants and the rest of the day thinking about them. I’m hoping that when I finally get one from start to finish, the anxiousness will diminish.

But then I’ll probably buy some real seeds and it’ll all be new again.

Oh well…. let me know if you have any input.:peace:

lol welcome to the world of growing!

great looking rig u got there, I find the creativity and inexpensive nature of this grow very commendable.

Sorry to hear about the males, the good thing about it is now you have a lil more space for the females to stretch and catch a few more rays of light. Dont forget that Mr Green grew 1/4LB off of 4 clones under a 400W HPS in his DVD , hopefully you'll be able to do the samev if not better with your remaining females.

hopefully itll all be worth it in the end.

keep it up, the grow is looking good so far, I'll be sure to follow this one

Thanks for the encouragement friend,
The chronic video was one of the first pot related videos I found about hydro. My set up pretty much matches his, but it's in the back of a trailer.
I'm hoping for a high percentage of females in the veg area since I picked so poorly on the first bunch. Actually I'm glad I did, only two to concentrate on and more room like you mentioned.

Also, I just wanted to show my little clones. They look pretty good to me.
Of course there are no roots yet, just did them last night, but they were just clipped off the plant and thrown in the trash and laid there for an hour. They look completely wilted when I did them last night.

They came from a flowering plant, so I'm keeping them under 24/7.
I hope they take!!!
Also a first flower pic and some roots.
Thanks for looking everybody:peace:

 Well. tried the sugar and yeast CO2 contraption the other day. I shook it up and walked away. When I came back, it had overfloamed up like bread dough. I cleaned it up and it didn't look like it got in the resevoir. I was wrong.
One was looking bad last night, when I opened it tonight, two were down.
I had been checking the PH and the PPM, they stayed normal.
I had also changed the nutes the other day to a stronger solution, folling the BC grow instructions. I figured I would change back to the weaker solution.

I guess you know what I found. The nasty yeast concoction in the bottom.

I am so pissed at myself:twisted:

It's an ebb and flow system, so I flushed them and the whole system, cleaned the tank and did a new mix. I'm too disgusted to take pics so I'l give them a few days and see what happens.

I know they'll probably come back, but how bad do you think it will be? Four weeks into flower.

    argggghhh :spew:
