day 29: back from holiday now and to a big surprise, they're huge! i think there's been a little stretching for the light but better than burning eh? even the damaged one has made a comeback.
looks like flowering ain't far off either, what do you guys reckon?

cheers guys! i am indeed a very happy man.
i think the stretching issue sorted itself out as the tops got closer to the light. the top of one plant is not probably just under a foot from the light and with no burning issues (ahem). i have a fan blowing into the plant/bulb midspace so presumably this is helping out quite a bit.
are these babies beginning to flower? or is this just a sign of sex?

both......the sexing part of the plant when shown is the beginning of flowering
it needs those parts in order to flower properly
I think that as you get further into the plants life the light can be closer and closer with a lower chance of burning
i saw pics of a guy whose 600w hps was like 6 inches from the canopy of his plants.....so i guess the height from the light can be relaxed

cheers for the input guys, the unit does get quite warm because of the ballast being built into it. the thing has been about 9" away from the tops all day and with no burning. i have a small fan blowing directly under the light, see pic. not including the hood, the tops of the plants are now about 12" away from the bulb. i think i will set up a bigger, sweeping fan though.

day 44: all systems go! the girls have stopped growing upwards and are most definitely growing outwards! they smell soooo nice. even my parents don't mind hahaha.
my friend recommended i tie them over a little to get even light coverage. and seeing as though the tops were heavily budding but the lower canopies less, so i have done as he suggested. i had to put almost no effort into pulling them over and so i don't think there's much strain on em. i also used a really soft string so there will be no damage to the stems. used slipknots so that the rope can open up if need be, if that makes sense.
also, here is my bhut jolokia, doing pretty well. anyone fancy a taste?
