Looks like you are using a type of potting soil. The update pic looks pretty good.

What type of soil are you using? Potting soil, outside soil, moss, or combination? Looks like you had a light issue. Looks to me if you want them to flourish more add a few finger pinches of crushed limestone around the entire edge of pots. You should notice a nice green up. How often are you...
