  • Can you please explain this info, im noob in electonics. Quote "The HLG-185H-C1400 can run 3 CXA3070s on each driver or the HLG-185H-C1050 can run 5 on each driver. "
So for HLG-185H-C1400 can run 3, but how to connect exactly, series? paralel? how to wire them?
same for the other option for 5 cobs.Question, say one connects 3 cobs to an HLG 1400, can one run just one or two cobs if all 3 are not needed ?

Yes they would be wired in series. You could use a bypass switch to skip one or several of the COBs but those drivers are dimmable also.
Hi Supra, can you recomend some 50w,1400mA drivers from Hong Kong based ebay sellers? its less dodgy then china and faster shipping.
    Regards from the Balkans.

2 of 3 LED look like splattered. I push the Driver Yesterday to 100% and i don´t know if this was the failure. I´m not the best in Soldering but there wasn´t a Problem the last half Year, so could you give my some tips what if done wrong or what could be the failure in my System? At Monday i will get a Voltmeter to Measure if the Driver is defect or one of the LED... :(

In the other 2 Rows outside the are also splattered LED´s i recognize today but they are still working... Plus and Minus from the Driver to the LED an back is also correct, strange...

Hey bud sorry to hear that! I saw the pic look like it was heat damage. Looks like they were mounted with thermal pads. Do you have a link to the pad specs? Were the COBs and pads making good contact with the heatsink surface?
CXB3590's are like dual voice coil subwoofers. Once Digikey gets some, I'll pound them.

Good way to put I never thought of it like that.
    Hey Supra,
Did you ever measure/work out the efficiency numbers for CXB3590 CB, below 700mA ?
I imagine something close to 56% at 400mA - 450mA, am I dreaming, or does that sound about right to you?
Thanks again for all the precious data and work !

Hey man thnx for the encouragement. I tried to extrapolate the current droop from the CXA3590 data. At 350mA, I estimate the CXB3590 3K CB bin to be 58.7% and 22.9W, $3.80/PAR W

Over 50% more than HPS, simply amazing !
    Thanks again :)

so four in a 2x2 is 22.9 par watts per square foot?
    Hi Supra !
I can't thank you enough for all the precious research and info you have provided our community with. I think I've read just about all your DIY topics/posts, digested most of the knowledge and info, and I'm now ready to plan my first CXB build, not sure wether it will be a 3070 or 3590 build yet.
What's up? It looks like one of the CXA's that didn't really have a good thermal connection with the heat sink is cracked and flaking. Do you put weight on the chips to cure the paste? Is this light safe right now? The circle is not completely lit up. Only about 50% is lit up.

Hey man sorry to hear that, sounds like it is cooked. If you installed with thermal paste instead of thermal adhesive, you have to use a COB holder or kapton to keep it in place.

I used Kapton tape. Is it safe it blows out? That's all I want to know? I guess I should just fix it asap.
    Hey Supra!
Lots of great info. I am a micro grower and I want to switch to some Cree CXB's. I know these only have a viewing angle of 115 degrees but do you think you could recommend a Cree setup for ONE plant in a box of 1'x1.5'x with one foot of growing height, scrog setup? I realize its not ideal but wondering if its possible to keep something like 5 x CXB1512 or 10 x CXB1304 only a few inches from the canopy?

The CXB2530 3K U2 would probably be perfect for you, top bin and available from Digikey. Or CXA3070 3K AB from ebay. Good luck!

    Thank you for the reply.
Isn't the CXB2530 only half as powerful as the CXA370 so would I need 2 x CXB2530? And use that same driver to drive both?
Should I look into a dimmeable driver so I dont risk burning the tops if they get too close?
I want to go with your single cob on a 6 inch heat sink with a fan. You stated under 75$ if memory serves correctly. I have found the parts indeed I just need to figure out how it all works and how to put it together. Didn't see you mention a power supply either, how can I get this build started is there a diy on it somewhere? Thx in advance
Time to build some new lights. CXA3590 5K DB for vegging. New drivers HLG-120H-C350B for vegging, HLG-185H-C700B for flowering.

Can't wait, if you document the build in a thread please piste link here I would love to tag along for the ride!!
I need some help I have been doing reading through your post and just need some advice, let me know if you can assist. I am a complete noob when it comes to soldering/wiring electronics. I did wire up a homemade grow fixture one day but that was very basic. I want to make something simple to cover a 2x2 veg area. Thx in advance

Hey bud, I am working on some new vegging lights also. The CXA3070 5000K is available in AD and BB bin. The AD is cheaper and 80 CRi but requires minimum purchase of 10 and ships from China.
    Hi Supra,

I've been doing a lot of reading and a little dabbling with LEDs. I'm getting ready to order up some of the Luxeon Royal Blue (qty 3) and Deep Red (qty 12) and was wondering what you would recommend for a driver for each.

Considering their cost I think 700mA is a good compromise to run them at. There is a "20W" 650mA driver on Fasttech that is only $6 but if you want enclosed drivers there are some on eBay for $13.

But if you are looking for a cheap up front cost, the Vero 10 5000K on a 2.08" heatsink is tough to beat.
im looking to do a hans panel style light that i can use in a 3x3. also what would be better, a bunch of vero 10s or the cxa, im looking to have 200-250 watt panel using as few drivers as possible.. something that will veg Fast and keep the plans short a bushy in flower. im only trying to grow one or two plants at a time, thanks in advance.

The Vero10 is a very good cot value and a good compromise on efficiency and spread. Great option for vegging. If you go with CXA it is better to go big and run soft so it costs more but you get much higher efficiency.
Love your CXA3070 thread -- I finally read all 134 pages. One of the most on-topic and useful threads I've seen on any site.

Have you made any progress on using 3070's for video lights? I think I remember you saying something about that. I'm thinking about high-CRI lights myself for video, seems like it might be a decent low-cost alternative to pro gear.

Thanks, glad the info is getting out there. I have a 3000K 97CRi Vero 18 that I use for photography and I have tried 4000K 90 CRI Veros, both work great. I have tried filming under 3000K CXA3070 80 CRi at 2.4A when I need really bright light. It works great color rendering is good skin tones are good.

seems like 2 CX3590's (one per umbrella) could light a small studio -- about 36K lumens when driven hard. If you could keep the fans silent that might be interesting.
i seen that light you recently was checking out that uses cobs. i seen that had 6 cobs drawing 600w so they would be running their cobs at about 90w a piece? i really like what they are doing but figure i could build me a 800w+/- using 16 cob for the same 4x4 area still using less then a 1000hps for less money

They are driving them the with NPF-90-42 which is rated at 2.15A, so that should be about 80W dissipation each. They are working on a new design with better heat management, looking forward to getting one to test, should be soon. True you can build one yourself much cheaper if you have the spare time and it can be very enjoyable.
if getting the cxa3070 ab what color do you recommend 3000k for flowing and if getting vero29 4000k? thanks again will probably do a thread on icmag after i get most of the supplies to get help with putting everything together.

Yes the 3K AB is good for flowering on its own, but as far as the Vero29, that is a very good question. The 3K Vero has more red than the AB, but I have not tried flowering with it so unfortunately I cannot say for sure regarding Vero.
what you would run them at? plants no taller then 3-4ft
what driver would you recommend to run the most at once given the amp you recommend. thanks again

I would recommend 35W/ft². The 1050mA version is best bang for the buck in term of driver cost. The COB cost would be slightly higher but you will get an efficiency boost in also. That would make a pretty righteous lamp.
hello supra really appreciate all the information you are sharing. im interested in building a 2xcob setups for a 4x8 tent. any suggestions. i was thinking maybe running 4 cobs per driver to help with wiring ect. also was thinking about maybe 2x4ft heat sinks per 4x4 each with about 8 cob. this would be for flower only. thank you

If you ran at 1.4A, that would give you about 25W/ft² which might be a bit on the low side especially if you grow them tall.

The HLG-185H-C1400 can run 3 CXA3070s on each driver or the HLG-185H-C1050 can run 5 on each driver. You could also go with the Vero29 if the CXA ABs are hard to find. Good luck!
Supra I've seen that you got some passive heatsink. I need something like that for 3070. Can you tell me where did you get them from ? I found only in China , but the shipment was 8 times more than the actually product.

HeatsinkUSA.com if you are in the US. The 5.88" profile is very good for passive cooling CXA3070s. Good liuck!
