10 Year old seeds. Will They germinate? Lets find out!

Whats going ROLLITUP!! I decided to attempt to germinate my ol' gpas 10 year old seeds. They were tucked away in an altoids can in his safe for 10 years. I planted 15 into jiffys around 15 minutes ago. Lets see if these babies got what it takes. He swears theyre the best shit he ever smoked in his life, no idea what strain though. So, whats your thought guys, will they pop?

Yes they will if the location of storage was cool and dry as well as dark.

Yeah, hopefully they will. I planted some nice colored ones with stripes, some seeds were HUGE and some were small

Your best bet would be to take them back out of the pellets and soak them in some warm water for at least 24 hours, maybe more. Seeds that have been stored that long have often lost some of their internal moisture and soaking them will rehydrate them and increase your chances of success. Good Luck and Happy Growing

Hate to say this.. but... they wont pop. Not a single one!

Them old seeds are too old. Based on my intuition and knowledge of vegetable seeds.

They probably wont crack, i tried some old nebula seeds that were given to me from a buddies mother. Supposedly they were at least 10 yrs old but I germinated at least 20 of them and none of them popped

the absolute oldest seed I have ever had grow into a plant was about 5...maybe 6 yrs old. and I soaked thousands (about 1.5 lbs of seeds)to get only 3-4 plants in the end. They were stored in air tight, light proff containers in the freezer.

anything in open air, room temp is only going to last 3-4..maybe 5 years tops. 10 years is long gone buddy, sorry I dont have any hope for ya..

Don't spend a lot of time/effort on them, soak them for 12-24 hrs., try germinating them but anything that old, even if stored in ideal conditions will be unlikely to pop. I recently tried some 5 yr. old seeds that weren't stored in ideal conditions and had 2 of about 30 I tried pop. Fresh/relatively new seeds pop in 3-4 days almost 100% for me so it wasn't anything like the method used, they were just expired...

i have a 28 year old clone, if it can stay alive that long a seed can sure as hell pop, how many do you have? cause undoubtedly the germ rates will suffer, id say 10-25% of them will crack. you can help by scuffing them (put very fine sand paper in a pill bottle lining the edges & lightly shuffle the seeds about in their. also soaking in a light h202 solution would help as well. kill pathogens ect also if u really want to get at them look up Ga3. what part of the country are u from if ya dont mind me askin? might want to trade ya for a few of the larger big ass seeds

Post pics of this clone, I don't do this often, but my God I don't believe it. It would be a f'ing tree by now. Jack would be climbing down the bastard with some poor giants gold.

My guess is you will have a hard time germing any. Here is a link to my first post where I asked a similar question. lots of good tips...
scuffing and soaking will give them a better chance. Hope you have better luck than I did.

There was a thread on the forum in summer last year where a bloke was attempting to germinate some 20-30yr old seeds he had found in his dads/grandads stash tin after he died an everyone tried pissing on his bonfire as well..........week or 2 later when a shitload of em popped an grew into decent healthy plants over the next few weeks they werent so cocky all of a sudden lol

Honestly though I reckon you have a 50/50 chance of em popping, would be nice if they did though

also if you put "old seeds" into the search bar it will bring up quite a few threads where ppl have germinated 10/20/30/40yr old seeds with varying successes.

I was just going to mention this piece of advice highlighted by the above post. After soaking the seeds either put them in a damp paper towel inside a ziploc bag and place them on the cable box or into soil and placed on the cable box or a seed starting mat, and then........ LEAVE THEM ALONE. After this long being dormant and with the loss of moisture, it may take some time for the heat and newly introduced moisture to activate the embryo. I have had seeds take 10 - 14 days to pop and I ( sadly ) have crushed seeds after a week that appeared to be green and viable because I lacked the patience to just simply wait. Good Luck with the project and keep us posted whether they pop or they flop.

just because its that old does not mean its the same plant that started out, the clone is 28 years old, im sure its been cloned 10+ times by now to start new moms.
a pic would make no difference in validating my claims
but for the sake of sharing heres an almost 30 year old cut of skunk 1

About 1/3 of my 8 year old seeds popped a few months ago. They were stored in rice at room temperature. My guess is that you'll have some of them pop, but don't count on too many.
