Is it in a hood with glass? Air cooled? Those things make a difference. I have mine in a hood with glass, not air cooled and its about 18 inches away with no problem.
I have also heard if you put your hand where the top of the plant is and it starts to get really warm its too close.

if u put 1000 watt 3" to 4" from ur plants ur gonna get nuthin but dead plant, even with a cool tube its gonna burn the fuck outta it. simple rule of thumb at all times with mh or hps is put ur hand at the top of the plant and if its burning so is ur plant just keep moving the light until ur hand can feel a nice gentle heat, thats it, i run1000 watts and im 7 weeks into flower and my plants are strong and healthy and i guess my lights are around 14".

18"-24" away is the best distance IMO. I use hoods that have holes in both sides though, and use a light mover for both of mine. I wish I could find the thread, but if you care to dig deep enough into this, you'll find that is the sweet spot for most lamps/reflector distances.

Agreed. 18 to 20 in seems to be the ticket for me, even with aircooled hoods. I have a 4x8 table, and any closer than that I get light fall off at the sides and corners.
I aint going for the fact that anyone has their lights 3 to 4 inches from the tops. ESPECIALLY with 1K HID lights. You'd have to have hoods cooled by refrigeration to do that, and with that limited amount of light spread, you could only put only a very few girls under the hood that close to the plants. They'd bleach out at the very least.
