12/12 testing a clone for sexing/space for mother plant question

Haven't really seen either of this covered but anywho two questions.

So obviously you sex a plant using a clone to avoid wasting nutes/media and time and space. My question is, do you even need to allow it to root? Do you even need rooting hormones? As in, can you literally just snip a branch off, stick it in a party cup and switch it to 12/12 and sex it before it dies?

Second question is, motherplant space. I will want a mother to take 4 clones off of. However the only space I have is a drawer a computer tower goes in that I used for a cabinet autoflower grow. Would I be able to keep a mother plant in a 1 gallon container in a small space about a food wide, 2 feet high 2 1/2 feet depth. (just imagine if you have a desk with a built on computer tower storge, it's that size)

Thanks for your time <3

Question #1- No, you need to clone it as you would normally, it won't show sex for 10 -16 days and without growing some roots clone would be dead...

Question #2-Yes it could fit with lots of FIM'n and ETC... one clone at a time... if you're good, then three or four at a time... sure why not

You need to re think your grow operation, no to all the noobie questions unless, you have a way to keep a cutting alive for 2 weeks without roots, stick to feminized autos until you got the gear!

the space is too small to keep a mother for long at least if you scrog it maybe... i might be full of shit its not impossible why not just buys seeds or get clones from your plants before you switch to flower seems like you have space issues that might work best

Righto, technically I don't have space issues, but rather money issues. I'll be getting a 3x3 tent, to put in my closet and ill have plenty enough room to put another tent like a 2x2 for a mother clones and 4 vegging plants..But I can't afford both tents at the same time. So I definitally won't be able to go the cloning route until a 2nd or 3rd harvest. Then I'll get the necessary things for keeping a mother/cloning. So I guess ill most likely just buy 10 mixed seeds, then keep a male in there to pollinate. Since I'll have no money left for anything cloning related. I'm contempt with reducing potency to get seeds so I don't risk wasting money to order more. Hence why im definitely going to be keeping a mother/cloning/seeding myself.

First - plants need roots to veg. Unless they are autos the plants need to veg before they flower or pre-flower. Second - you want a short, bushy mom. When the donor mom has been in dirt 2-3 weeks do a traditional FIM cut to the crown. Instead of decapitating the entire top bud, leave a thumbnail-sized piece at the bottom of the top bud. That's a FIM. Best way to keep 'em short and bushy while getting 4 main colas is with a FIM. A regular topping would do the short and bushy but is more likely to produce 2 main colas, not 4. NOTE - getting 4 same-sized main colas due to a FIM is a factor of luck. But that's your best bet. good luck, BigSteve.

Answer is no. Those that say no haven't tried. I've kept a bouquet of cuttings alive in a solo cup of water for over two weeks before putting them into an aero cloner and rooted them. Taking a cutting of unknown sex and putting it into flower (12/12) will indeed show the sex of the plant. A cutting doesn't need roots to show signs.

I have experienced the same thing about two weeks and the tops I took and placed only in thrive alive water can show sex eventually. But by then my seed plant is already about 6 weeks old and was ready to show sex . I use my first tops as clones. double your female count and keep the best ones, if you don't have room.

yeah i am saving the tops of my new girls who are abput to be mothers! why not make use of that Beautiful cutting, the top i would think would be the best clone, but that is just my thought. making mother plants is kind of like making a Pollard--a tree pruned at the same spot every year producing Amazing beautiful Straight poles, lots of them more and more every year--just mothers are for planting cuttings instead of making poles for use as with a Pollard.
