150 watt hps medium base: regular ceramic base ok?

If by "regular (household) socket", you mean a plastic fixture - than definetly not! An HPS just runs too hot for a plastic socket!

You need at least a "regular (household) socket" made of porcelain, to handle the extra heat. But HPS lights have a "Starting Pulse" that hits 4,000 to 5,000 volts. That may, or may not, blow your socket like a fuse.

Your best bet is to get a "Pulse Rated Socket" @ 4 or 5 KV, like the ones in this link:

tHANKS, iKNEW i NEEDED A CERAMIC/PORCELAIN SOCKET,i JUST DIDNT KNOW IF IT HAD TO BE OOPS.... sorry,caps lock on :) a pulse rated one,never had a non-mogul
base hid bulb before. had a spare s55 lying around and saw a medium base socket bulb on clearance for like 5$,so figured what the heck.

hps and halogen have different ignition processes. Are you asking if you can hook up a stardard household fixture into an hps ballast?

All I was finding at the hardware store where I found the hps bulb on clearance as far as medium base sockets went was ceramic ones,but they were 250v/660w ones.
