1964 - MY FIRST BUD

I was 14 when my folks moved us out of Detroit and into a distant suburb. I'm the oldest of 4 boys and the parents could already see the neighborhood going to shit and wanted to keep us boys out of it. I caught a bus and got dropped off in the central city of Detroit. Took me 10 minutes to hook up with an old black guy sitting on the curb in front of the 4 Aces bar on Trumbull Ave., just blocks from old Tiger Stadium. He sold me a "deuce" - $2 worth of pot. A deuce was as much bud as could be put into a matchbox. I took my treasure home and waited until the house was empty before trying my first hit. I used an old pipe I swiped from the old man, put a bucket on my chest in case I threw up and lit up. Nothing. Either I got ripped off or I was doing something wrong. Tried again a few days later and ended up with my dick in the dirt. I don't know why I didn't feel anything the first time. Anyway, November will be my golden anniversary with the bud.

Anyone else been around that long to remember deuces?

Deuces, $1 jays, $5 grams of hash and $10 Z's....ahhh the good old days. I'm as old as you, but started smoking weed a few years after you (I don't need that shit!). And for as much as I have abused my brain, those memories are still pretty clear :eyesmoke: The 60's was a great time to be a "pot-head". Missed out on most of the Free Love days, due to being in SE Asia. Where it was more of a "Pay for Love" type of thang...lol But the pot was amazing! Both here and overseas. :hump: The Thai sticks especially, most likely due to being laced with heroin and opium...LOL Talk about being "dik in the dirt" high. You'd be on hands and knees searching for it  What am I lookin' for again? bongsmilie

We lived in a Golden Age, my friend. Days never to be seen again  But we did come away with some fukin' great memories :bigjoint:

Yep, 10 a lid, or $15 for Acapulco Gold, Panama Red or Columbian. Back then, homegrown was something we tried to avoid at all costs because it was always ditchweed. How times have changed.

I was dealing pot in San Diego in the early 1970's. Back then a lid = a full four-finger sandwich baggie that went for $10. Same thing as a "can" and assumed to be one ounce. When a ship came into port the guys would select one or two of the swabbies to make a pot run. They would cough up $100 or $150 and want that many lids. No discounts asked so I always made the bags as big as possible. They called me BigBagSteve and that got shortened to BigSteve. Kept the nickname through 3 motorcycle clubs and 40 years. Being 6'2" and 260 pounds probably helped.

I had a hook-up with the local Mexican M13 set who sold me mini-bricks for $110-140 per. The bricks were about 10 x 14 x 6 inches and weighed 35 oz.+. They were super-compressed and my connect told me they had an industrial trash compactor they used to compress the product. I usually copped on a Friday so Friday nights were often a brick party. I'd cover the kitchen table with newspapers and place the brick in the middle. Everyone would tear off a chunk of the brick and go to pulling it apart. Product was so compressed that the original brick, half the size of a shoebox, would fill a large paper grocery sack when fluffed out.

Earlier, in 1967, I discovered psychedelics. I was buying mescaline by the ounce. After adding the filler an ounce of product would turn out 1200 hits. I was buying cheap generic vitamin capsules at first so I could empty them and refill with my product. That's a lot of work and gave me my first thought of a capping party. Had some folks over, showed them the process and we went to work. Things went fast and well the first 2 hours. Then the square table got round, people's faces started to melt and the capping party ended soon after that. I hadn't counted on everyone ingesting so much of the powder as we capped and that was the end of that.

Any other OGs out there with stories to tell? Next time I'll tell about the time I was tripping and the house got raided by the Grand Rapids vice department. I was keeping my mud together fairly well until I thought to ask the head vice guy for his ID. I kinda melted because I could read the name on his creds -- Sgt. Pepper from the GR vice squad.

Be careful and have fun out there.
BigSteve.
