1) how long do ballasts last. I have been thinking of the switch to 400w and I looked at the prices can get 1 off ebay for like 120 to 140 but I looked up ballast and there almost as expensive as the whole setup. So whats a normal ballast life how many grows can you get thru.

2) fans I need em but I don't want to buy the big 4" and 6" fans I don't need this much (small closet grow 7'x3'x2' HxWxL) So I have seen these muffin fans but don't want to ghetto wire some cell phone charger or something like that. Where can I find some intake and exhaust fans that I can just plug in.

You will need a 4inch exhaust fan with a 400w light in that space, it will get hot.

I looked up the digitals all I can find that comes with light and hood is a 600w otherwise its an extra 150 bucks to buy it by itself. I think 600w might be too much 4 my small space what do you guys think?

They arent that fucking loud, its the 1000w which i have just next to the 600 that I can hear firing up when it turns on.

if you check the bulbs on page 5 or 6 there are plenty of 35 dollar bulbs. you can get 1000 or 600 for less than 200, I am not paying another 150 tohave it be quieter when its not that bad its a damn light. The fan will be louder

Well I did hear one on a you tube video and it was loud. I want to make sure its light tight and sound tight don't want someone coming near and hear a loud buzzing noise. I am looking into a digital setup bulb hood ballast all of it but I can't find a complete setup for a 400w all I can find is 600w +. The main cost of the complete setup is the ballast no? I want to spend aroun 200$ on a decent to good setup thats quiet and low heat that will last

Your fan will be louder than the ballast. My magnetic ballasts have a five year warranty, so should have a shelf life of atleast that. I haven't ever noticed any noise from my two 1000 w ballasts, but then again I have 6" vortex fan and multiple oscilating fans. They are hot though man, you will need a good 4" fan.

So a squirrel cage fan will be loud? I dont relly have an exhaust system right now I'm using cfl's. But will the fan really be that loud? is there whisper quiet exhaust fans?

Some people aren't getting the fact that with a 400w light in a small space you will need a noisy 4" or larger exhaust fan and a good fan to circulate air for the plants or you will cook the holy fuck out of them. You will not pull this off with computer fans or anything running off a wall wart.

If you want cheap and good look for used 4-6" can fans on ebay or craigslist for your area, or look for squirrel cage fans 4-6" used also those are powerful but cheaper.

You can even salvage big 6" squirrel cage fans from used Jenn-Air downdraft ranges or similar probably. It's a seperate part from the stove and you can just wire it up to the wall or better yet wire it to a speed control. Many people can tell you how to hook up two wires to two other wires with wire nuts and how to turn the nuts clockwise to tighten them too in case you are afraid of just getting a fan and having to hook it up to a cord/plug.

I use magnetic 1kw ballasts and some have a hum but none are the main source of noise, and I don't even have to exhaust my rooms with a high speed exhaust fan I'm just using floor fans and a/c. I could easily silence them if I wanted too work on it though.

400w ballast kits are $50 again so simple to wire... 400w warehouse ballast hps's are everywhere for like $50 ready to just connect a plug. Halide ones are average $25 on craigslist. You can remote wire them, there are threads already showing how to do these things with pictures if you search or just ask in a new thread when you find what you want and you'll have the answer in no time.

I'm the king of cheap... For a long time I've been collecting the most budget stuff I can find in bulk to make up a 20kw grow and I have a fraction invested of what any sane person would say that setup would cost. I'm not running that yet, I'm preparing to jump on the bandwagon the second the laws change locally though. I'm going to cash in big and then buy better stuff. You will find whatever you buy will likely give you more than enough return on your investment that you don't need to even think about it. How much is an ounce where you live if you had to buy one? You can get used 400's for the price of an 1/8th and 1000bulbs.com will give you cheap bulbs.

Hell I have a full case of 14x 400w hps bulbs brand new I don't even need anymore. They are only selling for $5 ea on ebay, so I'm just letting them sit here. Screw it... They're cheap.

(Just make sure the ballast you are looking at is 110-120v or multivolt or multitap not some weird industrial voltage only .)

Sorry forgot to say that...

Also forgot to make a point that if you get a 6" fan then you can use a speed control to slow it down and build a box to put it in and sleep next to it. You should also think about a DIY cooltube or buying a whole setup with a cooltube on ebay or something if you just want to buy something ready made that will be the easiest to cool then you won't need too much work to cool the space or noise at all.

Well after this grow I will have more money for this stuff after the new year so I am doing my homework on this stuff and I want a good deal doesn't have to be cheap cheap just not overpriced for the quality. Wow u just gave me a great Idea you must have a room with a AC vent going in like an extra room I just remembered right above my closet there is a vent that runs right above the ceiling. Maybe I can pipe in cold air during spring and summer and use a smaller quieter exhaust fan like a 75cfm pc fan. wonder if that will work

Fan math. The CFM of the fans should be enough to replace the cubic footage of your grow area every 5 minutes. Example: 7'x3'x2'=42cf. 42/5=8.something therefore any fan that moves 9+ cfm should be fine. Adjust your air flow to balance your temp levels. Trial and error is the only way I know for fine tuning...
