250 watt HPS proximity to sprouts?

Starting my 2nd grow, this time six plants with three 250watt HPS, fox farms soil and PBP nutes. I germed the seeds in paper towel and moved them into their pots. I have them all sitting in the grow closet with just one HPS on, elevated about four feet above the pots. None of the pots are directly under the light, they're set up in kind of a perimeter around it.

My question is, is this too little or too much light for these guys? I germed my last grow under CFLs and flowered with a 150watt HPS, so I don't have a real good grasp on the 250s, especially when dealing with sprouts.

Pointers?

i have my two week old seedlings about 4 ft directly under a 600 watt mh and they are doing well.

you want to get it as close as you can without burning. use the hand test - if your hand is comfortable at a certain distance so will your plants.

You will love HPS/MH for your seedlings! Way better then CFL's IMO. But CFL's will work as well.

Thanks for the replies. I have high hopes for this grow, so I'm probably over-analyzing things. At what point should I start turning the remaining lights on and moving them closer? I'm thinking 2nd set of serrated leaves.

Like others have said, move them as close as you can. Put your hand near the top of the plants. If it feels to hot, move the lights back up. Also, watch for heat stress. Leaves will start to curl and look bad when they are heat stressed. I wouldn't turn the others on until they get a little more stable. Maybe like 4 sets of leaves or 4-5 inches tall. Or, you can go ahead and turn them all on, see what happens. Like I said, if they seem to be suffering, cut the extra lights off.

When mine had about 3 or so sets of leaves, I had my 400 watt MH probably about 2' above them - maybe closer. They never had any problems with heat stress.
