i would say no because for less than a hundred more you could get a 600 or 1000 which would perform soooo much better for the price...

i would say support a local hydro shop because they will give you good advise and probably cut you a deal when you buy a new system. if not in your town then in a neerby one maybe?

I'm in SoCal, I'm a medical patient, and I know of several hydro shops. THe problem I have with them is that they assume that I am an off character because I want a 250W HPS and try to charge me $200 for the same system. 250W is my max allowance due to hieght restrictions and heat concerns, and one of them was like "No, you NEED to have the 400W, that's the MINIMUM". So in the end, I'm shopping around and I'm going to build my system from the ground up to suit MY needs, not what they want to sell me.

130 is overpriced imo, you could get a 600w for that,

i don't support hydro shops either, i just use them occassionally when i need something quickly, other than that i will mail order it and save $$$$$

hydro shops charge way too much for things

well usually when you build a relationship with the people at the shops and spend a couple hundred they start giving you discounts and freebies and shit. at least here if they take care of you..

yeah no doubt they start giving out some freebies which are usually things they are not selling very well, and they give you discounts of things that are heavily marked up in the first place, if you get freebies you didn't really want and your getting discounts on inflated prices how is that still any better off.

My hydro store sells 600w light setups for 180 bucks, i can get them elsewhere for 130, so if they give me a 30 bucks discount and some weird bottle i never seen before that works magic in soil but i grow hydro is that a good deal?

I'd prefer to buy cheapest and use the left over money to buy things i really need

Example: today, I walk into a hydro shop, and there is one guy behind the counter. Nutes were marked up 3x what I've seen them online, and they only had 1 ballast/reflector kit 250W for $210, granted, it was a cool tube. I asked him which light he suggested, and he said that I get the 400W for 21x15 growspace, then tryied to sell me a $200 inline fan to cope with heat issues in the 6 Cu. Ft. space. I know I should support local shops, and I buy my supplies from local mom&pop hardware shops. When they are trying to take advantage of my ignorance, though, is what makes me unwiling to buy.

Amen to that, the last thing I want is useless stuff piling up and then having someone ask why I'm throwing out "super clone rooting gel" with my weekly trash.

any tips on what to at least search for? Should I shoot for cheap assemble-yourself ballast kits or a growlight with a remote ballast?
