260Watts of True CFL lighting with DIY 10 bulb reflector! Lots of pics and plants

Hello everyone and welcome to my CFL cabinet grow setup. First off this is my first indoor grow. Regardless of all the literature I read about growing and the numerous videos i've watched, nothing has compared to the last 4wks of hands on experience! All you can do is take the knowledge you have from your sources and find out how to apply it to your specific situation.

When reviewing other's grow setups it all seems so easy. Here I am going to show everyone what I started with and over the weeks of trial and error ended up with! So please check out my pictures and information provided and hopefully I can inspire someone to incorporate some of my ideas into their garden.

To make a long story short; a fellow friend of mine was transplanting some seedlings into their pots and ran out of room for 2 of what seemed like "runts of the litter" I decided to take these babies home in some shitty organic miracle grow soil mixed with a few parts perlite. I had no plan on where to put these so I emptied this dresser below and decided this is what I would call HOME for these plants.

I had no supplies (lights, fans, or even a thermometer) so a late night run to walmart was a must. At the time the seedlings were in their 6hrs dark period, so I placed them in my closet and off I was. Having no idea what I needed to buy I did a google search from the store and grabbed the following:

1. Double light socket
2. 2pack of 23w 6500k CFLs
3. 14ft lamp cord
4. Electrical tape
5. Small circulating fan
6. Car windshield sun reflector! LOL I figured it would be better than tin foil!

With the above components I wired up the positive and negative wires of the lampcord to the lamp socket..taped it up with some electrical tape..and I now had a cheap efficient light source for now. I mounted this by hand screwing a hook into the top center of the dresser, using an old chain, and an old clamp I had laying around to get this below:

NOTE: When using CFLs, specifically the spirals, it is much more efficient to mount the lights horizontially vs. pointing the ends directly at the plant top. This can be shown with any decent quality light meter.

Needless to say I spent the rest of the evening online searching for more information on CFL grows and trying to figure out what I would need to keep these alive and get some hands on experience before I go out and spend $$$ on real seeds online.

So..my next day consisted of more reading through forums and I put together an action plan as follows:

1. Get intake/exhaust fans/circulation fan
2. Some pots with drainage holes
3. MORE LIGHTS for future growth
4. Reflective hood to re-direct the wasted light shining upwards.
5. Reflective material for lining the box (Mylar or flat white paint)

First I picked up 2 120mm PC fans from comp store. One fan was 72cfm (intake) and the other 90cfm (exhaust) I also grabbed a wired thermometer to hang sensor at canopy level for temp readings and a 6inch fan for circulation. To install the PC fans I used a 4inch whole saw bit and drilled out the bottom right corner for the intake and upper left for the exhaust. Also I decided to grab this 4 fan speed controller for $30. This eliminated the hassle of wiring up some 12v DC adapters to the fans and take up bulky space in my sockets. See pic below. Fan controller is mounted with Velcro for now as the Mylar is coming up next..

I ended up starting with some mylar that a friend had leftover. NEVER again will I work with this stuff! Wayy to flimsly and delicate to make the precise cuts I needed for my walls in my box. I did it anyway, but half assed the doors and side walls just to direct enough lights back onto the plants. Speaking of light direction I picked up a 10.5 inch clamp light (Pic above) to house my 2 CFL bulbs which actually turned into fitting 4 lights using one Y splitter with an additional Y splitter added to each empty socket. This was hung with some small chain hanging from a hook screwed directly into the center of the box ceiling. Easily adjusted for height and plant growth. (Mylar pic below)

I kept the box like this for another few days and decided it was time to make some upgrades to the lighting along with the reflective paneling. Once again I gutted the box and began a DIY 10 CFL bulb reflective hood. For all of about 70$ (not including bulbs) I put together the fixture below. If you are interested in making one, let me know and I will take the time and write up a parts list along with steps to make your own! Let me tell you… this sucker puts out some bright light. I never thought that a simple bulb such as a CFL could put out light like this… check out pics of my final product…(it measures aprx 24inches wide, 16inches deep, and aprx 8inches high)

Basically what you see here is the dryer vent stretched over 2 pieces of plywood cut to shape of hood with 2x4 in middle to mount lights. (NOTE: I only drilled screws for the 2x4 and plywood to check measurements. Nothing was installed at this point)

Before installing anything I painted the insides of the wood all around flat white.

Testing the polarity of my wiring job before moving to the other side:

Let there be light!

My room prior to flipping the switch was pitch black…photo was taken at 2am and it still seems like it was daylight in my room!

As far as new reflective walls I went with a product called Reflectix from Lowes. Not only is this easy to cut and place, but when I put my light meter back in the canopy level and closed one of the doors the reflectivity was noticibly stronger vs the mylar. Not to mention the inner parts of reflectix is 5/16ths of bubble type wrap which made for a nice dampening effect. I picked up a roll for under 30bucks.
Now here is how it all looks put together… I plan on keeping it like this for awhile as I am getting excellent growth

This is it for now… I have a nice timeline from seedling growth to where it is now in Veg of my oldest plant. I will post these pics later on today. Well maybe I’ll throw in one now for the hell of it… this is day 25 from seedling… let me know what you guys think. As far as soil I started with some organic miracle grow/ perlite mix and gradually mixed in fox farm’s ocean forrest and that is when the growth and health of this robust bush just started to really take off. I’m also using fox farm nutes… I feed FF Grow every other watering and Bloom the same way.

Day19

Day 25

Inner Growth is out of control which is why im considering LST to get those branches growing up and out... what do you guys think??

The pic down here is a few days prior to the one above...

Like I said.. Stay posted.. I have 5 very healthy seedlings going right now… within the next 10days I anticipate some nice new growth all around and will have LST the plant above. This is my first grow or test grow I should say… I also have a few not so healthy seedlings in the box as well that I am working on bringing back to life by diagnosing the leaf defects and taking the necessary action to test my judgement… PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE if there is anything I should be doing that I’m not or any ideas for the box please post! Thanks everyone. Be safe.

Nice diy reflector. Plants look good. I agree that now would be a good time to start lst. you don't want to let them get very tall with those cfl's. I would top them now too, but thats just me. Sounds like you have done some research already and built a nice set up, so you should be smoking some good homegrown soon enough.

definatley a good set-up. that refector is sweet. Hell if this don't work for you you could always sell those reflectors on ebay and make the money to buy a bag when you need to

i absolutely love that fixture you made. and the plants are the definition of healthy looking. your game plan sounds great. the only thing i would suggest is even more light positioned on the sides for flowering. you said this was your first indoor grow. did you grow outside before or did you mean this is your first grow ever? either way you're on the ball. congrats.

it dont get hot under that reflector? your plants look very healthy. nice work!
Thanks man. I've noticed that when the room temp outside my box gets higher than 78f the temps can hit up to 86+ inside the box. The room my box is in is the coldest in my house...and only hits this temp or higher if the A/C is off during the peak of the afternoon. So I've figure I can do one of two things..

1. Switch the cycle of the lights to go off from 11am-5pm.
2. Keep the a/c thermostat at 76 during these peak heat times during the day which has worked very well for me at the moment.

Ultimately I would like to opt for option 1, but was wondering if this would stress the plants? or are the plants photoperiods only a major concern during flowering?

Perhaps someone can "shed some light" on this for me. (No pun intended) lol

I was actually thinking about making a few more of these fixtures and selling them. Using CFLs seems to be what most indoor growers are opting for these days, but the #1 concern is where to house these things so that there isn't 15 plugs running throughout the box. All my 10 bulbs wire into one 3 prong grounded plug with minimal wire management needed. What do you think would be a reasonable price to ask for this sized fixture or even a smaller one? I was thinking close to $200? If everyone saw what the originator of this system vegged/flowered under this fixture $200 would be worth it all the way to either build/buy this. He had 12 plants vegging very nice and strong under it, then flowered 4 mid sized dense plants under it with no issues. Of course he had some side lighting and I intend to fabricate a adjustable side lighting fixture here soon as well. The wiring is very time consuming... took me near 2hours (prob get more efficient with practice) to get mine neatly wired up.

Thanks for the input on the plants man. I actually made many attempts in the past to germ. a few seeds and try to make something happen indoors and outdoors, but always got impatient and just gave up lol. With all the plants genetics out there and the availability of good seeds with the genetics you personally seek in a high is what has me even more interested in growing start to finish this time.

There is a local grower here (who I have not personally met yet but obtain his product through a family member when it is available) that continuously harvests Bubblegum, NYCD, Some Hawaiian strain?, and every once in awhile something he calls GrapeTrain? Anyways..after smoking the bubblegum I realized this was everthing I wanted in a high. Very relaxed and almost narcotic but def. euphoric. Almost similar to taking a percocet lol So Bubblegum from Serious is one I plan to grow... once I am done with the practice on the this plant along with the 5 strong seedlings that are coming along solid so far. I want to be sure I can successfully veg multiple healthy plants in my setup along with learn and apply various techniques such as cloning, lst, topping, and most importantly FLOWERING.

I haven't decided where I will be flowering and what lights I will be using. Stealth is not some much of a concern, well other than smell...I have nothing else to really hide from anyone as this bedroom stays locked at all times. So as it I have no major light leaks and simply closing the room door and locking it at all times would keep any guests from accidently walking into a room with a glowing/radioactive looking dresser lol as that would def. raise some questions.

Sic light bro, healthy looking plants to.
Thanks man! I am about to post up some pics I just took a few moments ago... Made some new additions to the family as well as added in a pic of a sweet ass oscilating fan that actually fits perfect and works well. You seem to have some experience on the board here... can I transfer this whole posting into a journal like you have in your sig? I have decided I want to keep an online journal for others input.

By the way... congrats on that first grow of yours! those buds look fantastic. What was the dry weight total? What wattage of cfls did you use?

Ok so I fell asleep around 10pm last night and forgot to check on my plants when I got home. sometimes I feel I look at them so many times a day that the only time I notice growth is in my pics lol. Having said that I came into a little surprise just moments ago and I wanted to share these with everyone... so enjoy!

Here is an overall view of what is going on in my box this morning.

Another view with the additional (older and recovering seedlings) and view of my oscilating fan to the left. It twists in the middle to direct airflow in diff directions while moving. Fits great in the box!

I chose not to re-size these next two pics that show the new growth in nice detail! I can't believe the quick pace of the new growth. I really see the FF nutes (grow/bloom) kicking in!

Inner growth

Healthy seedlings

These 2 seedlings were about to be tossed out last wk when 15days of seedling growth and they seemed stuck at their first set of leaves. Instead of removing them I played botanist and xplanted them into FF Ocean Forrest soil. Here they are now. 4 days later after the transplant into the new soil they are making a great recovery and all the new growth is looking healthy!! With some special attention over the next week I feel these babies will be as strong and healthy as they need to be.

I'd like to make this a journal and report in daily now that I have some continuous growth. Anyone have any pointers on how I can transfer this into a journal? I'm new to the board and want to ensure I do this the most efficient way.

Thanks!

Sorry, I have no idea how to put that on a juornal, but I wanted to know where you got that fan from. It would be perfect for my cabinet.

nice set up, whats the dimentions of the cabinet?

The dimensions of the space i'm utilizing is aprx. 34"wide 18" deep 24" high. But the entire cab is higher than that so I might make it a lot taller or have a clone/veg chamber underneath and use both spaces and flower in a closet in the room? Still playing it by ear. My biggest concern is smell. This one plant alone is giving off that pungent distincit aroma a certain times of the day.

there are some good threads on here that show som diy carbon filters to keep your smell down.
where did you get that little oscillating fan?

Thanks.. I'll look into it a little more since i'd prefer to be proactive vs. dealing with the smell once it gets bad. I got it at WalMart. It is made by Lasko and costs $20.00. Def. exactly what I needed for my cab.. it couldn't work any better.. esp when I raise the lights here soon.
