300 watt cfl

While at a store today I noticed these large bulbs that are not shaped like regular cfl bulbs. they are about 8 inches long and they say 300 watt flourecent bulb with a 4900 lumen output. I was thinking about getting 2 of them along with 2 hooded bulb fixtures for my setup bringing my total to 600 watts and 9800 lumens. Is this a good way to cheaply fix my lighting problem for under $50?

Read the packaging more closely. They're not really 300w bulbs, just as bright as a 300w incandescent. There are 23w cfls that are labeled as comparable to 100w incandescent. Consider this:

1640 lumens / 23w bulb = 71 lumens/watt
4900 lumens / 300w bulb = 16 lumens/watt

If they're actually 70w bulbs:

4900 lumens / 70w = 70 lumens/watt

As for 9800 lumens for $50 with only 2 fixtures needed, if space/hasle is an issue, sounds good to me. :)

However, some strive for efficiency. ;)

Most of the 85w CFLs I've seen have a mogul base. Beware of that, as well. They don't screw into regular light sockets.

You will probably find out too when you go to get the cfls you see they are not self ballasted they only go into special work light fixtures or outdoor light fixtures. They do sell standard to mogul sockets for fixtures but it they are the lights i think you are talking about i have seen em and they arent self ballasted.
