I will start this thread while I wait for my shipments to arrive (diy led parts). I have other grow areas but this thread focuses on 1 flower tent. I will use these materials for this journal:
-Apollo horticulture 3x2' tent
- four (4) Cree cxb3590 36v
- HLG-185h-c1400 driver & 100k dimming potentiometer
- Two (2) 5.886" wide heatsinks 21" long
- L angle aluminum brackets for heatsink supports
- smart pots, I have 1,3,&5 gal
- Fox Farm Ocean Forest Soil
- 6" Ventech duct fan exhaust & fan speed controller
-12/12 timer, accessory wiring and cords

Ok thanks for reading & stay tuned

Hey buddy, you're running almost exactly the same setup I am, only you're using 36V cops and 1400ma driver and I'm using 72V cops on a 700ma driver.

I too am lighting a 2' x 3' area with this module, and four of them do a great job over a 4' wide x 6' tall vertical trellis panel.

Subbed, check out my thread and I'll keep an eye on yours!

I'm about to order a cobs for a 36x20x48 space I was thinking of 2 options and I need some help deciding. I hope you don't mind me posting this here? Your space is similar to mine

Option-1
4x36v cobs @ 1.75 on Meanwell HLG 250

Option-2
4/5 cobs @ 1.4 on Meanwell HLG 250.

Ok so those dimensions don't make a lot of sense without being sure which ones are which. Assuming that's roughly 3' x 2' x 4' tall, my suggestion is as follows;

Use four CXB3590 36V with a Meanwell HLG 185H-c1400b, color temp of your choice (I chose 3500K, there is no wrong option), or four CXB3590 72V with a Meanwell HLG 185H -c700b. Both of these get you the same result;

54W per chip with the dimming leads capped off. 56% chip efficiency, 96% driver efficiency, for a total draw from the wall of 225W.

Arrange them along a single heat sink bar to evenly cover the rectangular space and ¡voila! 824 PPfD of awesomeness you just might never have to touch again, other than raising it over monster crops.

Thanks for the correction, the driver I meant was HLG-240H-C1750b to be precise
That's not the one for the combo I suggested above. Now, I'm not an expert at chip and driver combinations, either, so the few I know are proven but I'm not willing to go past them.

240-1750 runs 4. The 1400 runs 5. The 2100 runs 3.

Hi ttystikk
The space is 20''L x 35''W x 48'' tall. It's almost a 2'x3'
I was thinking about pairing 4x 36v CXB3590 3500k @53% efficiency with reflectors or not on a Meanwell HLG-240H-C1750b with a potentiometer to adjust the intensity down till i hit the sweet spot.

As for the layout of the cobs, I wanted them staggered to spread the intensity evenly across the canopy. Something like this [ O----O ]
[ O----O ]
I'm playing around with trigonometry to find the best positioning for the cobs so they're equidistant . Just a bit OCD. I prefer to measure twice and cut once.

I'm having excellent results with my modules lighting that same size space in both veg and bloom, no dimming involved.

Consider a single bar shape with a pair of COBs at each end. You'd want the centerline of each pair to be halfway between the middle of the space and the end, so 36"/2=18" apart. Each pair of COBs could be actively cooled with just one fan.

Thank you. How would I go about working this out with some math? At the moment I just have a few combos memorized, not the best approach.
It's all dependent on the forward voltage of whatever you're using. CXB3590/3070's are both around 36v.
So 240 means the driver hikes 250 watts. (it's close but pair driver series from cutter has exact wattage in model#)
So you take the fV 36 and multiply by the amperage. Let's use 1750 Milliamp version . ( or 1.75 Amps)
36x1.75 = 63watts. So watt total of driver.(250) ÷63 = ?.... 3.968. Forward voltage fluxuates and is lower with a Lowe current /amperage. So as you see, it fits almost PERFECTLY.

GET IT?

Working my way there...

So an hlg 300- 2100 would drive said COBs at 36V x 2.1A = 75.6W
300W/75.6W=3.968 COBs @75W apiece.

Now, each of these outputs will have a unique efficiency rating, lower as watts rises.

With my last batch, I chose higher efficiency over higher power. My next design will be closer to the example I just used, slightly lower efficiency but half again as much overall power and output for the same number of chips.
