400 watts in small space

Would it be safe for me to install a 400 watt HPS setup into a small (2-3' height) box?

yea .. but you will need a good ventilation (4-6") and I would realy consider a cool tube ..

and please ... dont make the "box" out of cardbord .. use plywood or somthing similar ..

if you dont allready have got the HPS .. get one with a digital ballast you can keep out side the box .. tempetures is your enemy here and a 400W will produce a lot ..

Use a 125 to 250 watts CFL instead.

I thought about using CFL but they dont produce dank and plumb buds. At least what i heard.

would it work if i simply put one of thoes personal fans inside the setup? or does it need full air ventilation?

i made a 9 x 4 out of cardboard. whats wrong with cardboard, i got a badass grow goin with cardboard. lmao

well your choise .. I hope you do use CLFs .. and even with CLFs I wouldnt risk it .. make sure to have a fire allarm close ..

and no a personal fan will not even come close to being enough .. if you dont want to invest and install a ventilation system and personal fan/s aso. I would maybe look in to LED or T5HO .. with them a small PC ventilation or two plus a fan can work ..


if it was me .. in a space like the one you are talking about .. I would choose a nice digital 250W MH/HPS insted of a 400W ..
use the money on a nice digital ballast that can run boath MH and HPS with a cool tube and a good 4" ventilation . and a small carbon filter to fit ..

that would work nicely for 2 plants .. Im sure a 250W MH/HPS with a cool tube will work mouch better then a normal 400W HPS with no cool tube ..
and cost is similar ..

that or a expensiv LED fixture (+500$) witch use less power and last longer .. and need less ventilation and fans so less cost here and power used aswell .. so in the long run it can pay of ..

but nomather what you will need some kind of ventilation .. the plants are a liveing organism .. need fresh air/co2 to trive and grow .. what you want to do indoors is to copy nature so to speak ..

Yo dude, would i be able to grow 3 plants (critical jacks) in an area of 3x3x3' with a 250 hps? i got the ventilation all working fine. Or should i go with 4x3x3'?

i would only do 2 with a 250 watt

unless i add a 75watt agro light?

yeah add some extra light you will be good for 3 small ones

I'm here to tell you you've heard wrong. I grow three plants with 750 watts actual of 6500k and 2700k and I produce some really good smoke.

I say go for broke brother! I mean you can figure it out. ( I hope ) The great part about most (I say MOST) people on here is they have the mental capacity to adapt and change and improve in order to accommodate the perfect environment for their loved ones (The plants @ least). I have faith that you too can do this! MO LIGHT = MO BETTA!

youd have to have monster ventilation, I & E. I have a 400 w hps in a C13, and have heat issues sometimes, even with an 8" blower fan running exhaust. I dont do air cooled hoods, but if you have to go with 400, you will HAVE to air cool your hood. Could just go 150 hps or cfl.

and you can always go to the HPS once you are in flower, less light means less heat, so on a 12/12 schedule the area wont get as hot over time

HiD lights do grow bigger buds, that is easy to see...some people can get HiD type bulbs using only CFLs, but it takes a lot of CFLs. There is a good bit of heat you have to deal with when using HiD lighting though. So...a personal fan won't do it...
I have a 400w Air cooled CMH with a fan pulling air across the bulb, and then another inline fan moving that air into the carbon scrubber, than another fan pulling the air out of the tent...along with a 20in. "windmachine" box fan just blowing all the air around...and it still could use even more ventilation..it is impossible to get everything too well ventilated, but easy to be inadequately ventilated...You can't have too many fans I don't think.
