I am growing in a 4 x 4 closet in the outside shed. i currently have only 6 plants in that space but will be putting in 10 more for shortly for 1 plant per cu/ft. i recently upgraded to a 600w hps for flowering from a 400w mh. grow equipment budget is empty after the lights nutrients etc... question is would it be worth running both lights? anyone done this mh and hps before? Heat is not a problem i can pull in 30 degree air and exhaust enough im in a shed.

Hell yea I would. Or at the very least add some other kind of light, but with no budget left, you don't have much choice. A 400w is way too small for such a big area by itself. And you only going to help things out by adding the other light to it.

In general speaking a 400 watt will cover a 4x4 area. But thats floor space not canopy. You are going to have to many plants for that little of space.

Why is 1 plant per square foot too many plants?
And generally speaking, if you look at most of the problem plant posts with pictures of splindly plants with popcorn buds, the reason is because they don't have enough light, ie 400w trying to cover 16 square feet.

No I would definetly say a 400 watt is big enough for the right amount of plants in a 4x4 area. Now if you ever decide to grow you will you will see that growing and flowering 16 plants in a 4x4 area isnt gonna happen(possible SOG but he doesnt have enough for two rooms). You wanna know why you see stretched plants? One: the light is too far away, and Two not enough light. 400 watt will cover 4x4 you must be thinking of your little operation your hiding from mom. Your allowence isnt that much so you havent been able to afford any kind of lights except CFL. But when you can and you will understand my child.

I didn't intend to piss you off or mean anything personal. I don't use cfl. I don't recall saying stretched plants either.

somewhere in here i read 50-70 watts / sq foot is a good setup. I am sure there are a few more knowledgeable people who can help you

is this enough light

the op is talking about useing it with a 600 w and yes a 400 will cover a 4x4 nice every few days rotate the plants outer edges to middle and you will get great results, even if you dnt rotate your plants you will get good results:peace:

mh and hps is ideal for flowering hps great hps+mh more gooder

I would use both, unless you can find another space for cloning/etc. The sun produces both blue and red, so why not use them since you have them! If you don't want to run that many watts, do what tussel said, and rotate em! The 600 alone would be awesome! Good luck bro!

Yes i have a seperate place for veg/ clone under floros. i just been rotating the pots about 180 ill start rotatin there places
you would only have to rotate the plant position if you were flowering with a 400w hps in the 4x4 but you say you got a 600 so you be fine flowerin there just keep turnin em like you are

yea its cool i think the op got ther info so its a dead subject but you will de ok with the light far for a few you should slowley lower it down as the plants get bigger so you dnt fry em,,, its easy to fry seedlings, you said they were just pokein out yesterday right?????

i usually leave my light high for ther first week of life but if you notice them streatching just lower the light you can recover from a lil streatch no problem unless they are like those monsters you had b4 only thing that could help that is what you did with cfls and a cage that was cool or put em outside..

i like to grow em with several tops at the same hight so you get more out of your light
