I can get my 400w Hortilux 5 - 6 inches from my tops.

It will cover UP TO a 3 x 3 area.

85F is max if you have good air circulation indoors. Mine avg 80F - 82F year round.

It is if it's not hooked up to anything and allowed NO restriction to exhaust.
Just straight out the wall/ceiling with active or passive intake from the floor and a seperate fan cooling your light.

Otherwise you'll need at least a 6inch to do it all, depending on grow room size and design.

18 " any closer and your at the point of diminishing returns . Just because it isn't burning your leaves doesn't mean some harm is being done . A good indication of being too close is the leaves will tilt upwards instead of being level and relaxed .

I went with the 6in fan and filter and couldn't be happier. You can turn the fan down with a controller, you can have extra ductwork to get where you need to, i was able to stand in the cabinet and burn one without the odor escaping the cabinet. From what i've seen it seems higher end fans tend to be less aduible...guess you get what you pay for.
I went with the 6in vortex as it has 10 year warranty and pushes 450 CFM, ofcourse you have to get the little larger 6in carbon filter. I don't know if it is the brand, Phresh, or the size of the filter itself. True test will come when in full flower......Just a newbie trying to get a nug....
