My guess would be that you could grow it to about 2 and half to 3 feet and start flowering. I have one it one of these that's almost three feet tall. The root ball is already massive, but my guess is that I could easily finish it in the 5 gallon res. But, I like to work with my 12 gallon reservoirs (well 18 gallon totes, with 12 gallons of nutrient solution). This is because I have to add water less often. With 5 gallons, once the plant gets mature you're adding water everyday.....Not that that is a real big deal. Hell I love spending time in my garden, so it's just another excuse to go on in... heheh.

I'm very glad to hear that this post helped you out!! that's awesome..

PS
My 18 gallon totes are built basically the exact same way. Just bigger... They work great. here's a pic of one of the flowers from my current grow. I just love this picture. :-)
That pic is sweet. Looks oh so tasty. :)

What is the reasoning behind not just starting the clone out in the 18 gallon instead of having to move it later on? Sorry if that's a dumb question, I'm trying to take all this in.. :bigjoint:

Here is a tip

Gaffer tape is only slightly less sticky than duct tape but much cheaper!
Good question. the answer is because my veg room is smaller than my flower room. Also, I only have two 400 watt metal halides in the veg room, where as I have four 400 watt HPS in the flower room. the 18 gallon totes are big, these are a lot smaller. So, it's easier for me to get all the plants I need to fit in the veg room with smaller containers.

If you have the space, then definitely start it out in the 18 gallon tote... I would. :-)

What's your point??? Who said anything about duct tape? I don't use the stuff in my grow room. I use a mylar based reflective tape...

I still don't get your post... Thanks for stopping by though..

Wow, nice setup! :leaf:

I actually built my first tote last night(following your directions), made one out of a 10 gallon tote and that's pretty big, well bigger than I thought it would be. Now I just need my seed order to come through and I'm in biz. :bigjoint:

Thanks again for the info. Saved me some money and wasted time for sure.

i built 1 of your $15 DWC for cloning last week, and i am start9ng to get a green film build up, i changed the water, and scrubbed it clean, b4 i reset it for cloning, but it went green in 4 days. is this normal? if so, how do i stop it from returning?

You may be developing a sort of algae... Is your container clear? Or white even? If so, you need to wrap the entire container in something dark so that NO light can penetrate it. Light will easily cause algae.

another thought is, are you getting good bubble action? Like in my picture? If the water isn't being agitated very well, sometimes that can lead to this issue.

One last thought: What kind of nutes are you using? Chemical or organic? Organic nutes will also cause this issue sometimes... Even the ones that are made for hydro systems.

Hit me back. I'll be watching this thread.

Quick question: How big a plant can one 5 gallon bucket support before you'd have to move it to a bigger reservoir. I am working with about 4 ft. height and that's including hanging the light down. Would 5 gallon reservoirs be big enough for my application? I also have about 40" of width and 20" of depth. You and this method probably just saved me a couple hundred bucks easy. Much appreciation.
As big as you want it to get...don't veg for too long or you'll have a height issue real fast...

I've added a two part remote res to my 5gal buckets, don't need to add water to each bucket, just fill the upper res with a fresh batch of nutes.....

Great idea! Great pics!! I love your idea of the two part remote res!!!! That's kick ass! nicely done!

quick question: what's up with the random water bottle in the middle of your plants? lol! :-)

i am using GH nutes/res is yellow kitty litter box, flip lid type. it is yellow, and i do see light leaking thru wall, i will paint them this week.

lots of bubbles too, green algae was growing on bottom of res even, too much air, kind of.

thank you

Yeah, try painting the res and see if that helps... It might.

No such thing as too much "air" or oxygen to the roots, buddy... the more the better, actually.. :-)

Keep us posted on what happens after you paint it. I've never had this problem with GH nutes...

I ran outta headroom....The water bottle was just a weight I used to bend the stalk over. If you look close you can see the bend. It woulda been over 7'...that was my first indoor grow, white widow.

Why even bother building this stuff anymore? They sell 20l black buckets with net pot lids for 10 bucks, plastic doesnt leek unwanted chemicals either. Build time is as long as it takes you to go to your local grow shop.

Maybe Im just disillusioned.

A bucket and lid from lowes is less than $5
A net pot is less than a dollar
If you wanna throw away 5 bucks because your lazy go ahead man
Why would you post in this thread if you are just going to knock it?

Yeah, maybe you are disillusioned... The two grow stores near my house sell the buckets that you mentioned, pre assembled, for $50. That's the cheapest either has... So that right there is a good reason to build these. Another good reason is for the satisfaction of having an idea and building it yourself and experiencing the joy of watching it work!!!

My reservoirs are plastic and most definitely DO NOT leak. I don't even know where you got the idea that they do...

Thanks for the ridiculous post..

Apparently some people like to focus on the negative, and just can't stop from posting their BS.
