so i just hung everything up and the setup is pretty much done, just need to place the pots. but my hps is giving me lip, the lamp wont go on even though theres electricity in the socket (ouch).... Ive turned it as far as I think I can without breaking it (is there usually a fair load of resistance towards the end when u screw it into the socket?) and I really need some advice.

headshop has closed for the weekend.

:peace:

Is there a fuse/breaker on the ballast? Check that.
Second thing, sure you got the right bulb? (ie: MH instead of a HPS. it happens, not often, but does happen)
Might be able to run out to a hardware store and get a new bulb.

Hear any humming?

Is it digital or magnetic ballast?

(did you stick your finger in the socket for that electrical test?)

I bought a light package, so I doubt the guys at the shop screwed things up by giving me the wrong bulb. Nope, no hummin...I guess there should be humming...its a magnetic ballast, as far as I know. I dont have digi camera, which I regret not buying earlier in the week, but it doesnt have an on/off switch or anything, just a little plastic screw:like next to the lamp socket. ya I accidentally poked my finger into the socket and felt current...Im a genious I know.

any sugs?

Little plastic screw thing?
Look like this? If so, there is a fuse inside there (unplug from the wall, please :) )

Though its weird that you can get power to the socket, but bulb does nothing. Feel like its the bulb.
I just checked resistance on a new 400W HPS, but read open.

Grab the part # on the bulb and google it.

a friend of mine brought over a lamp and it didnt work either..it has to be the ballast.

and ya the screw thingy was a fuse, althought it was seethrough..glass...dunno wtf the prob is, its a brand new ballast too so wiring cant be it. I basically hooked everything up (i.e. lamp chord to ballast, lamp to socket) and plugged the ballast into the wall, something I forgot to do?

sounds like you have a blown ignitor or capacitator.. that would be enought to keep the bulb from firing even though you got power.. hopefully your packg deal is still under warranty, the parts should be covered at least (which are like $30 each). labor is probably extra, and it might be a worthwhile expense if you're already shocking yourself, otherwise its pretty easy- just have to match up the wires and use some electrical tape to seal it up... good luck
