So what are the pros and cons of using 600w of cfls vs using a 600w hps or mh lamp besides the obvious amount of bulbs if I montes them all on one sheet of plywood and built a stand for it ?

Price & lumens.... Go hps

It would cost much more for your CFLs then for a HPS. Plus ALL of the additional work with wiring and setting them up. You have to replace your bulbs at minimum every other grow. Check the labels for the CFLs and do the math. I doubt your lunen output would not even be half of what u would get w HPS

There are really no pros to using the amount of CFLs that would equal a 600w HPS. For vegetaive growth, CFLs are a better option than HPS because you dont need the intensity and the heat and electricity are much less.

You dont need 600w worth of CFLs for veg if youre using the same wattage HPS for flowering. A T5 or even T8 fixture would be even better than spiral CFL's.

I dont understand what you mean by "mount them all on one sheet of plywood" If you use an HPS, get a reflector hood for it and hang it from the ceiling.

To get that many watts from CFL"s your going to need a lot and you'll have cords all over your grow area. Then there's the fact that you'll have to adjust all of those CFL'S as your plants grow. It would be far more efficient to use a 600 watt dual MH/HPS one plug.

I mean mount light fixtures to a piece of plywood and really I have most of the parts I was just wondering because I didn't know the lumen output of a 600w hps lamp and with the heat output being much less with the cfls i could use it to start clones and purchase a hps to use in my main grow tent I was really just wondering if anybody had ever used that many cfls before because there are pros. To using them less electricity cost, less heat , proximity to plants but there are also obvious disadvantages too as in lumen output quantity of bulbs and how long the bulbs last I was just seeing what you guys thought and if anyone has done it before

If you wired the fixtures correctly you really wouldn't have but 1 or 2 cords I'm not sure how many amps you would be pulling tho from that many lights it may pop a breaker everytime you turned it on
