600w vs 1000W

Hello group. I'm happy to have found this forum.

I've heard that running a 600w digital actually is more effecient than a 1000w.

Is this the case. The logic is that the 600w runs cooler so does not require the height clearance the 1000w does. As a result of the light being closer to the plant it will receive more lumens as the lumens dicipate with clearance.

So would a room be better off with 1000w or double the number of 600's????

whatcha all think?

Theres many threads debating this so a search will give you all the answers you need but my personal preference is the 600s.

Same here, I have battled this same question and went with the 6's.

cool thankx guyz. my gears have been grindin and it all makes sense. i have thowies now and deep down i can feel how its right as i know my current limits yet it still seemed like a step backwards.

any how cool thx i'll give it ago and expand if the densness is not effected.

Ya I'm 2 weeks into flower and I can say "So far, so good".
I have my 1000w on standby as well, but I don't think I'll need them.

From what i read in a light thread somewhere 600 is the most effecient but i cant remember if they included 1000's, one book says 22000 lumes at 2ft 600 hps, 35000 lumes at 2ft for the 1000 hps, 12500 lumes at 2ft for a 400 hps. I would go 2 600's lol if i only could dream because you could lap over and have much more growing space from what i've read no real life experience :(

Hey Sureshot, can ya keep me posted. I'd be curious to know how they finish or an update in 4 weeks or so. I think i might hit one more harvest and then purchase as they arent much cheaper than the 1000's. Its a lotta extra cost. thx

M blaze, are you growin with 600's? if so how many. do ya still need 2 per 4'sqd or do you just spread them out evenly?

thx

1000w
pros - more lumens, more wattage in less units, more intense light + penetration
cons - heat output

600w
pros - highly efficient for its class, allows wattage to be distributed better across multiple units
cons - cost/watt ratio exceeds that of the 1000w

600 or 1000.....

There is not a one size fits all answer here. It really depends on each individual set up (grow room).

Examples: If you are growing in a confined space (closet, cabinet, fridge, etc) where height, heat, etc, etc are an issue then a 600 would be a better choice and give you better results with less hassles. If you are growing in a large area where height, heat, etc, etc are not issues then a 1000 is going to give you better results. It is all about each individual set up.

Are you saying that a 1000 watt light is cheaper to run than 600?

no it costs more to run a 1,000 w

I'm saying when you purchase your ballast and accessories from the store, you are spending more $/watt in the system for 600w.

1000w offers 166% of the wattage available in a 600w and costs 10-15% more.

or maybe you can think 600w is 60% of a 1000w for 10-15% less retail cost.

regardless of the energy consumption figures I'm just speaking about straight up retail merchandise in terms of its output, I mean buying 5x600w for 3kw of light is more expensive than 3x1,000w for 3kw of light. especially because you need 5 reflectors instead of 3, 5 bulbs instead of 3, etc.
