A cautionary tale of cragislist - be careful!

So I said fuck it all, I'm moving to Colorado! The snow really is "leave -your-wife-and-kids good" at the moment....

Rented a moving truck to make the drive from Oregon. Knew it would be dear on gas, so on my own mother's suggestion, I perused the Craigslist ridseshare section for a passenger to split gas with. Found a dude going to pretty much the same place and picked him up in Tahoe.

This was the first time, out of maybe a dozen times, that I elected to make this drive with a clean rig. I didn't want to risk getting hung up in Utah when I could just be patient for a day or two.

Then, halfway across NV, my passenger asks me if I want to smoke a bowl. I wasn't surprised or mad, actually was pretty happy to puff some indoor OG. He said he only had a coupla grams, so I just said whatever.

Halfway across Utah, popo was embarking on one helluva fishing expedition. When I saw 2 k9 units behind a truck identical to mine, I knew we would get stopped.

Sure enough, woop woop! Homeboy comes up to the passenger side and tells me I was doing 86. Well that's an awkward feeling to have the police lie to your face. The truck has a governor that keeps it to75 mph, I literally couldn't make it do 80, let alone 86.

I get told to step out, patted down, and then he asks when I last smoked. I just shook my head no.

Tells me he smelled weed and was now going to search.

Now I'm standing on the side of the road with my newfound friend, who tells me he actually has quite a bit of dope in his backpack. About half a p, not really that much, unless yer in Utah!

Much to our surprise, the trooper gave the dude a citation and told him to be more careful. Said if he had a p or more, we would have both gone to jail. That would have been upsetting.

I got a written warning and he was off in a flash to go stop the next car that was doing nothing wrong - I saw 4 cars in less than a mile all stopped -for what?

If I had asked my passenger if he was holding, he would have lied! Be careful folks - you can go to jail for somebody else's crime! I think I am done with rideshare!

i record everything on my dash, cops are retarded pigs and if they try to lie to a video recorder, they lose their job and possibly face incarceration due to the fact that they are falsifying legal documents. Believe it or not, when a police officer lies on a speeding ticket like that, he/she is committing a crime of; fraud, perjury, and falsifying evidence.

I would have told the cop, "did you read my door panel? .. it clearly reads that this is a vehicle which is monitored.. If you wish to pursue the lie you are asking me to sign, I will prosecute you to the fullest extent of the law. Arrest me if you feel the need, I will prosecute you to the fullest extent of the law. In a couple of hours, family members of large financial liquidity will be beating down the police jail and demanding justice.. - expect calls from state Senators explaining your actions as well.

What I would NOT do is explain the fact that everything my vehicle records is also uploaded to a cloud server.. they can try to destroy the evidence against them, but what comes to light in the trial, the police will realize one thing, THEY ARE HUMAN and NOT above the law. If you play your cards correctly, you can create a mega-million dollar scandal on police activity. It is not your fault they are harassing you, defend yourself, buy a video-streaming camera which can immediately upload everything to a cloud server.

I have been pulled over about 5x in the last 5 years, during those times, the police officers saw the video equipment and they left without ticketing me for anything. I tell them, I don't agree and I will see you in court.

You narrowly escaped that one by a hair. Ya always screen strangers. Warrants , weapons , coke, weed only I'm allowed to have those in my ride alongs

thanks for your kind words billhilly.

@ pSi007 - I appreciate your advice. I think video cameras can be your friend for sure - I will get one when I can afford to. I didn't even know about the cloud server - but that's technology your friend there!

unfortunately the fact that he lied about my speed became moot the second he smelled the herb. I wouldn't try to antagonize the cops though - I would suggest that maybe his radar gun wasn't reading properly - otherwise I think directly accusing them of lying is going to piss them off and the interview may have gone differently.

Its not the first time I have been pulled while dirty for no reason, then let go. Everybody has their own way of dealing with the cops and a set of rules they go by when intereacting with them. The fact is, you don't really know how things are going to play out and I thought of several points I wish I had raised afterwards... I just remain calm, call them sir, use my most polite manners, and above all, try to evoke a blend of confidence and restrained irritation.

TripleMindedGee - you are right - I should have screened him. But how? He told me straight up that if I had asked him if he was holding, he would have said no. Should I have searched his bag first? I wouldn't want a stranger looking through my stuff. I think it's just better to let strangers remain strange sometimes.

Hoonry - asking the right questions. Kinda of a reverse psychology effect. I usually take the upfront approach " what you packin or holdin bro." Sometimes it's ok to be a duck. Especially when your freedom and safety are involved. But you made it. Lesson learned . Masoltov !

hehe - slowbus you make me think - what actually was going on? Either they were working that stretch hard that day - Halloween thru xmas is a prime time to snare eastbound loads of weed, OR they had some kind of information that something was coming through...

I can imagine that the police have been seizing so much weed in recent years that a joint no longer holds much appeal for a bust - you spend all that time driving your victim to his cage and you miss the huge loads. I really think they were hoping to see wrapped kilos of anything stacked floor to ceiling - the mother lode! So even a half a pound is peanuts to them these days when they know they can still fine you and make $ for the state, and still have a shot at catching the big boys.

Once, years ago now, I had a cop in Utah tell me he meth was his biggest concern, and that he thought we would all be better off if people smoked weed instead. He quickly followed that statement with the disclaimer, "not that I condone smoking weed..... but I used to do it all the time when I was younger!"
