Hey blackout (I feel for you bloke), and all

Luckily everyone was out at the time, except for the old lady that lives there. She got woken by a noise and got out OK. The folks here looked after her and the fire brigade got here about ten minuets after it started. However, it was an old 1920's Queenslander...meaning lovely dry wood that fires love. It is basically gutted and everything inside is destroyed.Three fire engines and the street blocked still. They managed to bring it under control and save the house next door though. Lost a puppy in the fire.

UPDATE:

The attached photos show the fire when it took hold at about 7 pm. The later photos were taken about two and a half hours after the first few. The very last pic is a screenie from Google Maps Street view of the house taken last year.

Ph03nix, her two daughters and the girl who owns this house raced over as soon as they realised it was bad. They looked after the lady from the house and we brought her over to here. In one photo you can see the neighbour with a garden hose trying to help fight the fire.

The lady who owned the house was pretty freaked because she didn't know if anyone else was still home. She'd been asleep all afternoon and had smelt something and woken up, stumbled down the front steps and then the fire overtook the front steps.

Ph03nix let the fire fighters know that there were cans of fuel and motorbikes and another car under the house. Lots of boom and pops from under the house while it was burning.

Well, no one was hurt in last night's house fire (that's one good thing I suppose), but the family has lost everything, including one of their dogs, some birds (galahs, I think) and some fish. The house is gutted. There are places where you can see right through the walls and into the back yard. The fire was huge and raged (that's the only word I can think of to describe it) through the house so quickly that it was scary. The house next door lost all the louvres, and has some heat and water damage to the side closest to the fire. According to the news this morning, 5 houses were evacuated. There were 3 fire trucks and probably a dozen or so firies. There was also an ambulance and 4 or 5 cop cars. It drew quite a crowd of on-lookers, including at least one news crew and several of the papparazzi...

The lady of the house was the only one at home at the time, and had only just made it out of the house before the first photo that Gryph posted had been taken. She had been having an afternoon snooze and had only just woken up. She smelt smoke and went to investigate. She walked down the front steps and a few seconds later they were engulfed. For a little while she wasn't even sure if anyone else had been at home. Someone contacted one of her sons, who then rung around to make sure that everyone was safely accounted for. It was rather heart-breaking there for a while though.

I must commend the firies for their help last night. They did their jobs like troopers and the fire was under control in less than half an hour. They hung around for a few hours though, just to make sure it was all out. The forensics guys are over there this morning. They had a car out the front all night and this morning they all turned up en masse again to start sifting through the wreckage. The place has been cordoned off and the street is blocked again. They have a cherry-picker in and it looks like they're taking aerial shots.

Might go out on the verandah and have a coffee... check out the talent.. :hump::wink:.
Right girls??

Another quick update.

We just found out that the firies managed to save the galahs (yay). Also one of the dogs (that was rescued from his chain last night and ran away) turned up home this morning. Some of the family are waiting to see if they can go inside, and he's back safely with them.

Heh

Not that I know of. Couldn't smell anything last night, anyway.

It made me wonder though.... Imagine if a place was full of pot plants and went up in flames... :joint:

Now THAT would be a f*$kin' fire. bongsmilie

Another house went up in flames in our town yesterday. Sadly, a 3 year old and an 18 month old baby died. The mother, grandmother and another child got out safely. Two of the neighbours also tried to reach the trapped kids and were turned back by the flames. It's a terrible tragedy and kind of freaky after our own close call the other night.

But our recent experience also made me wonder about the men who tried to reach the kids and couldn't. How must they be feeling? How would I have felt in the same circumstance? I guess we were lucky in a way... sure our neighbours have property damage but at least everyone made it.

Our condolences to all concerned.
