A few questions on HPS......

I will be using a 400w HPS throughout my grow. I ust have a few questions

1. Can you veg with a 400w HPS or is the light to strong?

2. How far should I have the light above my (4) plants?

3. Has anyone had good success with using HPS throughout grow?

Any help at all is appriciated

Mh is better but hps and vegging will work. Ya could just get 400 mh bulb. Distance depends on size of plant. As a guide 18 inches or higher. Distance has a few factors.

i'll be honest i haven't grown with an hps but from what i understand:

Yes you can veg with it- it's just not quite the optimal "color" of light for the plants.

You should keep it about 1.5-2 feet away from the plants, maybe a little more when they are very young. Basically if you put your hand under the light and it's too hot for your hand, it's probably too hot for your plant.

Yeah you can use HPS throughout the grow (but again-i've never done it, so take what i say with a grain of salt)

1. Yes you can use HPS for vegging.

2. Generally 12 inches away... but you should use the hand test.

3. I've never used an HPS. I will be using one for flowering pretty soon though. Many many other people use HPS for vegging as well as flowering and they have had great success... but Dirtyboy is right, MH is better for vegging.

ive just finished vegin with hps...worked great! didnt strech as much as i thought.
