A quick seedling and soil question

So after I germinate my seeds...What kind of soil do I put them in? Can I start out with FF:OF soil? Or should I put them in regular outside soil for a week or so till they sprout then transplant into bigger pots with FF:OF

This just sparked another question about lights. Should I sprout my seedlings under a 400w MH or will it make them stretch? Should I use my flouros for a week or so then switch to the MH?

i would throw them right into the ff soil myself.. i think the idea of putting them under the cfl's for a week or so is a good one too.. make sure you don't give them any nutes for atleast three or four weeks and you should be good to go..

Nice nice. Thanks. You answered another one of my questions about when I should start feeding them/how fast do the nutes already in the soil get used up

yeah.. the ocean forest is full of all kinds of organic goodies in it, so you don't need to feed for awhile.. i let the plant tell me when she is getting hungry and ready for some food.. you will be able to tell fairly easy.. she may slow down in growth, stiart to get a lil yellow on the tips, etc.. i don't know what nutes your going to be using, but start them off slowly. like 1/4 of the dose on the container, and every week or so bump it up another 1/4, so that after a month of feeding you will be at full doseage.. also, i like to water, feed, water, feed... etc, so that they aren't getting an overdose of nutes everytime if you know what i mean.. just water them till you see a lil runoff coming out of the bottom of the pots, and water when you stick your finger in and it feels dry down about two inches or so, and you should be good..
hope this helps you out some, and remember to have fun...

Get some seedling compost but without any added nutrients just good old compost.I buy the cheeper stuff and just rub it through your fingers and take out any large pieces.I would add a little perlite but then again i like to crush this into smaller pieces.Once the seedling has split i place mine in a cube[Rockwool]then i place the cube straight into soil. You can germanate it in the cube if you like but i always place mine straight into soil. There will be people who use other methods but by useing the rockwool cube the seedlig once it starts it's growth will grow straight up.Where has if you place the seedling in just soil the seedligs tend to coil growing down then back on them selfs.I would also advice useing a cfl rather than a metal halide lamp. The metal hhalide will come in later in the growth but i would start under a less intence heat source.I also think that useing only superthrive in with the water straight from the tap and ph it at 5.5/6.0 gives you that extra edge.Good luck keep green and remember thatyour seedlings even though the seed has split can take up to seven days before it shows it's self. Also use a mister rather than watering the seedling or you could be washing it deeper and deeper in the grow medium mist 1/2 a day...............................TYKE..........................................................................

hey tyke.. thanks for that info on planting a rockwool cube straight into soil.. i have always wondered if that was possible or not, and you just answered my ?'s.. i didn't see why it would hurt anything, but i don't ever recall anyone else mentioning this, unless of course i just missed it..
thanks again though
