Ok, First Post, Long time Creeper, I am currently on my (7th) indoor grow. I use my HID For budding, i have a mother plant in a toat under CFLS and i start my clones under CFLs, My partner, Sprout to Nug, used 3 CFLS, And i must admit, his product is more or less equivilent to mine. Weight wise I have NO clue what yields more, but i can tell you im going to find out in approx. 6 weeks

what can i expect from 1 200w cfl combined with 2 24w t5's on a total of 5 plants?just curious as im trying the cfl way,i was getting 2 to 3 oz per plant from my 600w hps, dont think they will amount to this but all comments would be welcome...peace..;.))

Just thought I would throw this in folks, don't asume that just because you are using CFL lighting, you can put the lights within a couple of inches of the tops of the plants. Take a little experiment with me. Lets asume you have your lights right down on top of your plants within, lets say 2.5". And lets say your room temp instrument is on the wall at the same height of the canopy of your plants, (which it should be there abouts. Since there are different temps to different levels in a grow room, it stands to reason the temp your plants are growing at is in the safe range of the height you have your temp meter when it is reading a perfect 76 degs. sounds like the perfect set up, does'nt it!. Go put your hand up beside the thermometer, and just feel what the temperature feels like. Then quickly put your hand 2.5" away from your light. The temp is well over 90 deg, and in some cases even higher at that distance, depending on what type or brand of light your using. Now!, we all know that temps above 82 deg, at long periods of time can disables or slows the plants photosynthisis production, and in result to this is slow grow, suspended antimation, photosynthisis shut down. The only reason I put this on the forum is because some of the long time myths, are just that. I grew with 12 @ 26 watts. Light worked great, the plants grew very slow. After I raised the light about 1 foot above the plants canopy, it was like you had shot them in the butt with penacilen. They never grew so good. YES, it's true, the overall temp of the plant is at the perfect temperature, but the top of your plant is saying get that hot @$%^^$%^^ away from my head. Fans do the job of keeping the temp constant around the plant, but not the whole top. Test it for yourself and see if its just a myth, or fact. Good luck growing fellow farmers and may the good LORD bless your gardens.

wow dedication or what i knew this was the right place to get advise, im using 4 cfl lights at the moment (output 200w) my plants are 15day old and to be fair they look healthy and green and growing quite well each day (in my opinion anyway as i dont have anything to compare to as this is my first attempt), i was planning to switch to my 600w hps at some point as i thought this would help with the grow and i thought cfl wouldnt be strong enough to give me the buds i want when its flowering time, after reading all this im confused again..let me know what you think and comments please.

I have not read this thread but with 710 messages it has almost certainly been said, but it is a proven fact that you will get far more grams per watts used from HID lighting than you will from CFL lighting. If that alone is not enough for someone to do whatever it takes to use HID lighting I don't know what would.

If someone wants to match the amount of light of a HID light using CFLs they will burn more wattage doing so than using HID lighting. (Watts on the comparison below are actual watts, not equivalent watts.)

Light Output Comparison Chart
Each scenario above represents approximately 50,000 lumens.

This long thread gave me no real answer to the advantages & disadvantages of cfl/mh/hps. I thought at some point during the thread there would have literally been a comparison table or something of value, especially as the thread is stickied! I'm sure it says something in the rules about correct english and punctuation?! Anyway, I'll look elsewhere on the forum for information. Funny thread, but only for the bickering.

Its Disadvantage is its Disadvantage itself. Only a Reject Monkey with OCD would pick the Shiney Button that Says "CFL" over the Rusted "HID" Button. If you did not have an ELECTRICAL BILL once a month. HID WINS EVERY DAY OF THE WEEK. if you Wanna RELATE TO CFL IN ANY WAY. please get T5 possibly an 8bulb 4ft. anything less helps you find your keys in the dark

You are trying to hard in front of ppl you have and will never meet. CFLs are GREAT FOR SMALL GROWS, But if BIGGER IS BETTER. Than a Small Grow is Shit. Thus CFL is Shit, past Vegging. HID HAVING A PLACE? More Like HID setting the Standard. CFL is for Teenagers Hiding their Grow From Mommy IMHO. If you CAN LEGALLY GROW BUD, IN NO WAY SHAPE OR FORM SHOULD YOU BE USING CFL, Save your Change or Use your Bedroom as a grow room. I AM GLAD YOU HAVE FOUND A BETTER USE OF YOUR COMPUTER THAN PORN.
wow i have forgotten i had that lamp as my avatar i have come so far since then and it's all do to the help of this site and this sticky thanks. you know i dont know if i have said this about HID versus CFL but with HID alot of people tend to over light plants just like you can over water them you can over light them and what ever the plants dont need/use they will kick out in the form of heat and in that alone for the small grower CFLS are great. not that HIDs dont have there place. i use pretty much all know sources of light CFL,HID,LED,plasma, and afew others.

I nave no way of venting hid lighting the heat would would be well over 100 in the box it is a stealth grow on east coast electric very expensive this is first grow. a 250 watt watt hps would be better but doing what I can with what I got.

Ok. More info on the grow area? If doing it Illegal I have no Pity for You. Uhh, If not Illegal why such a small Box. Never Mind, Even IF* ILLEGAL. it would be worth growing a plant in the OPEN under a 250w HPS than 2-3 tiny plants in a box under CFL. CAUSE IN WORSE CASE, 1 plant is EASY to DESTROY / HIDE / GET RID OF, You can just throw it out the window. so IMHO, if GROWING ILLEGALLY. Go Big or Go Home cause a plant is a plant no matter which light its under. and if GROWING LEGALLY. Go BIG or dont Go at all.

I haven't read anythinng but the first paged and its total bullshit. first you only mentioned "pros" and no cons, and at that they are jokes at best. I highly doubt, actually I know you are not pulling 2.8 grams per watt which you claimed.

Will a cfl grow pot? Yes

Is it even comparable to an hid? No

i have used both hid lighting and cfls and theres benefits to both and then negativities to both, if u wanna say ones better then the other then ur completely one wayed and biased, not everyone has the room for hid lighting let alone the heat issue most hid systems have. if ur not a dumbass and dont know how to use cfls then no ur not gunna get good results, as far as potency goes theres no difference between the two kinds of light, not to mention the high electricity bill hps or mh have, compared to ENERGY EFFICIENT cfls, pull the stick out ur ass all ur cfl haters, anyone can grow with hid

and the lastwood ive heard of pro growers gwetting around a gram per watt for you to say 2.8 grams oper watt is just ridiculous and i would love to see a detailed grow journal of that

And take into consideration whats best of you is no way shape or form saying that its the best for another grower, everybody in this site has different restrictions, strains, type of grow,(topping, lst, fimiing, scrog, sog), grow space, so just cuz it works for you sdoesnt mean itll work for the next person with completely different setup, all these lil crybabies on here complaining if u dont like cfls dont come on the forum talking shit, were all just doing the thing we love best, its called a hobby just have fun and learn what u can anything you do anything,

ive ran about 600w´s of 23w cfls at one time, also ran 300w´s of 4 foot t5´s.
tried 55w cfls. all tried in various positions, surrounding, on top. usually kept less than a inch away.
tried 70w hps, 150w hps, 400w mh and 600w hps.

it Is easier to cool hps than cfls. (taking into account that you can remote ballast the hps.)
id pick 70w hps over 150w of cfls, id pick 150w hps over 300w of cfls.

even though lumens Do combine, they dont get more intense. intensity counts.

cfls degrade sooner than hps bulbs. And they get hotter over time (Way hotter in some cases, cfls are not all equal)
replacing cfls over time is way more expensive than buying hps bulbs, plus more expensive to run.

cfls are a nice way to start though. easing into it.
faster growth means more things can go wrong more easily lol

but i can get a foot tall plant in 2-3 weeks under a 600w hps, stem about as thick as my thumb or thicker, leaves bigger than my hands and its only foot tall because i lstéd or topped it and it has 4+ tops.

under a t5 system id get a plant the size of my hand and with less than pencil thick stems. smaller under cfls.

growing under cfls is way more work and usually results in burned leaves, always adjusting the cfls or plants (resulting in more stressed plants(the more you can leave plants alone, the better they are off))
