you see it seem to me that people feel that if you give it the most intense light you can find and the best hydro setup that it equils dank fat buds and that is simpley not true.


CFL's do not have the danger or heat problems that HPS and MH have also it cost more all around to dissapate the heat and the smell with it also CFL's are self ballest in most cases and there are so many that if one goes out you dont have to shell up 150.00 or 250.00 or what if the ballast goes out what if either of them fail while you are out of town and you loose the crop if one or two fail then i loose a few lumens and keep on rockin again consider the fire danger while you are gone a fan can fail of trip the braker also they use less wattage and you are able to spread the light as you see fit in most cases instead of coming from a central location high above i will say in defence of the production grower large intense lights are a good and usefull thing because it cuts down on the doliers per OZ of production that in my opinion is the onley time you would need the extra lumens i my self will never grow more then 14 plants at a time i get around 3-5 OZ per plant with that light at 14 plants only geting 3 OZ per is still 42 OZ every 4 months what the hell will i do with all that and i am only using about 420-680 watts when you have MH and HPS you are stuck with on or two kelvin ratings and that is it with CFL's i can swap the kelvin rating as i see fit mabey i want to flower at 2100 kelvin mabey i like 6500 kelvin for veg or mabey i want to try 4500 kelvin for veg and see if i get a better sun leaf with CFL's there is room for discovery and creativity we know that all strands are not the same and come from diffrent parts of the world mabey you would like to plant all dark purple indiga and the next crop you want to plant a virgin sativa they have diffrent requirments for light and with CFL's you can provide that with half the cost just remember people that the higher you go in watts when buyin a single CFL bulb the lower you go in lumens per watt stay at 26-55 watts and that is the best spot to stay...................... here are the periods that belong up there disperse them as you please

how such an unintelligible post got stickied is beyond me. try punctuation!

another question regarding the CFL setup in the avatar. Do you realize that most of the bulb's light comes from the sides, and your setup therefore wastes a ton of it?

And the second post - "reaches for the light due to its intensity" or something like that. You realize that when the plant reaches/stretches, it's a result of not having enough light, right?

how do the cfl's meet up to the high demand of lumens needed if combining cfl's does not increase lumens?

Though given, it is irrelevent ! Lumens are for Humans not plants ! Lumens measure how we see light. Our eyes prefer green light. Green light has the most Lumens, Red and Blue the least. Most fluorescent lamps are made to look bright for humans by adding huge spikes of greeny yellow light.
Lumens only measure how BRIGHT the light appears to us.
Lumens cannot measure light useful to plants

That's true in part, but by looking at the spectrum of the bulb and the lumen output, you can make a judgment as to the quantity of light available for use by your plant.

Red and blue count toward lumens, just not as heavily as green.

ok. i finally got the perfect space to set up for grow.....i just bought a new house with a basement and i am really REALLY fucking excited...but this is going to be my very first growe ever and i am a bit naieve to this whole thing. I kind of want to do the "I GROW CHRONIC" set up that is posted on you-tube, but is that a ligitament set up or what???? also .......my base ment, which is at ground level, has a window that is some what secluded that opens and shuts and locks very well..... but here is the thing. this window is the ONLY inside/outside ventilation that the basement has...the washer and dryer are also down there and the dryer hose is not leading outside...instead, the lint from the dryer is just basically being blown into a freakin bucket...... so what are my options if i want to seal off the window completely from the outside world which would only then limit my options for any free flowing air i might want or need in order for my plant to live......right???? WHAT DO I DO????

Run your Dryer hose into a bucket of water. That'll catch the lint and keep the air clean. Just remember to check it every once in a while so it doesn't backup :)

well after two and a half hours of reading 14 pages and biting my lip to stop myself from tellin y'all to stop being a pack of bee-atches, i've come to the conclusion that i am no further on than when i started reading. painfull i know but i'm never getting those 2 and a half hours back!

for those of you who are still interested in helping those of us who are new to the whole growing at home to save geting ripped off by your dealer, i will post as much info as i can on my set up, in the hope that i will get some intelllient and coherent feedback on what my next move should be.

five weeks ago (on saturday just past) i planted my 4 unfeminized white widow seeds (post germination). these plants are in a wardrobe, the walls of which are covered in reflective foil. they are in regular potting compost with drainage at the bottom. the light i am using is a 64000 lum cfl, 125 watt, cool white. i have no preflowers as yet but i expect they are just around the corner which is why i am trying to find out which light to go for next. and soon. i vary between pure water and a water soluable feed which is 20-20-20 (sightly high i know but someone else did all the shopping and i have taken over the project due to privacy issues) which also contains all trace elements. the plants are currently on 18hrs, sometimes 24hrs just for a boost although carefull not to burn them out. there is also a hugh extractor fan by the door. there are only four plants however they are already quite tall. i was almost decided on buying a red or warm white 125 watt cfl for the flowering stage which i hope to begin next week until i came onto this site and now i've got myself into such a tissy because i don't know what to do now. when i saw the title of the thread i thought oh thank m.j herself! but all you guys did was bitch and winge and bitch some more. can someone please tell me, without jumping on my case for using cfl's in the first place, because god forbid i should get anything wrong on my first grow, with so much contradicting information out there etc etc etc,.... will i ruin my crop if i dont go hps?? should i try to scrog my plants so late on if i want to use a cfl rather than shell out for a hps/ mh and ballast? also is it better to encourage folliage growth or stem growth?? i've seen this argued everywhere and cant find a clear winner.

hoping to hear from you all soon.

except for all y'all bitches out there. you can just go pester someone else. i dont have time to read any more bull shit!

well... i just finished a CFL grow and it went well. the bud was fuckin kill, nice and frosty...disco shit. you can harvest a very decent crop with CFLs. if you are looking for BIGGER, TIGHTER, and MORE buds a HID of some sort is the way to go. there is no reason to not get one if you can afford to purchase, and control one( temps, electricity) . CFL's can be more effectively used as vegging lights. they perform very well, are a lot cheaper to run, and will be staying on a lot longer than the HID used for flowering. i just dont think that they put out enough light YET to be able to produce like HIDs. hope this helps JAMES

well-put. i think the most important considerations are how much space you're dealing with, how many plants you're growing, how big you want them, and what your expectations are.

nice one. thanks for the input. i have a few questions. how many plants did u have under ur cfl?, did u do any pruning or scrog? how long did u have them in veg and flowering? and finally, what was your yeild?

No dryer should ever be vented inside a house it can create huge mold or dryrot problems, not the heat but all the moisure just being thrown right into your house and the wood it's made of.
Take the window glass panels out and cut a thick sheet of plywood to fit over the frame. Use drywall screws or whatever to attach it from inside. The cut a whole in it for your dryer vent and run the dryer out that hole to a proper vent cover like you'll find at any home depot or whatever. Vent your grow space the same way, get aluminum ducting and a vent cover and squirrel cage fan. Don't connect your grow duct to the dryer duct and run just one line out either, bad idea.

Make sure you have no light leaks or gaps for bugs to get in with spray foam.

You keep the window panes and if you ever want to reverse it all you can just unscrew the whole thing and mount the window panes back up.

i had five flowering females under about 150 watts of cfls in a reflective enclosure veg'd for bout two weeks and fim'd one of em and topped a couple others prior to flowering. yielded a good zip of dry weight minus anything that was less than a point two dry... had bout another ounce of that fluffy lil undergrowth, used it for butter...
