Advice on 100w CFL Grow

Hi Guys,

While i wait for my 300w LED to arrive im using the current setup:
5x 20w CFL (3x 6400k, 2x 3200k)

I am like 2 days from seedling into this grow at the moment.
Its an Easy Ryder #2 (low ryder x ak47)

I have 5 cfls on the plant all REAL close. The fan is facing away towards the wall so that the air bounces back and the room is hella well ventilated because of it. the lights aren't getting hot at all and the ambient temp seems low. I am waiting on a hygrometer to arrive that i ordered (should have it in a few days)

Any advice on how i could do better?
I know there is TINFOIL. It will just have to do until my reflective hood LED arrives.
Unless the plant will suffer terribly in the next 2 - 3 weeks can i just use the tinfoil for now?

Hit me with suggestions.

The sprouts are low. Indicating there's more then enough light. I'd leave it alone. The more variables you add, the more complex things get. Making smaller problems a bigger pain in the a$$.

It looks good the way it is.

I'd say you really don't need the tinfoil at this stage of your plant with all the lights you have lol it'll just make temps rise, but won't hurt anything if you didn't wanna take it down. Just maintain good airflow xD

Just unscrew all the bulbs but the one over the plant and then raise that one about 6" and you'll be good. The foil's okay though. Later, as it grows, screw in another bulb and then 3 etc. Or I guess maybe run 2 or 3 but raise the fixture to about a foot.

Why are you gonna tell him to put ONE 20w cfl 6"away or 2 or 3cfls a FOOT away? No way. The light will almost be nonexistent that far away. With cfls if you can put your hand inbetween the plant and light and keep it there comfortably it's good. Cfls are very weak! That will stretch his plant.

Because it's a seedling. If I can grow seedlings with a 5 watt LED bulb 8" above then probably a 20w CFL 6" above could also work. The idea is to grow it not cook it. CFLs are hot as hell due to their inefficiency.

You cannot compare cfl to led lol and really? I can literally grab a cfl bare handed all day long. Do some research on cfls grows. You will find 1-3" away depending on how many cfls and watts is optimal. Led and cfl light intensity is very different. BUT I never said it won't work! Of course you can grow it that far away with cfl but it's not optimal at all.

Fine, I guess it will get it used to intense light so it won't bleach as much when he puts the LED up.

Grew with CFL's for 2 years. Your doing fine. 2-3" away, keep an eye on it. When you get the LED, start out around 18-24" The plant will let you know if it's happy. I NEVER Bleached a plant with a CFL.

Do you have proper ventilation? Or at least something to deal with the smell later? All I see is a little fan. Anyhow food for thought and happy growing.

Thanks everybody! It seems the plants doing fine and its about 1.5" from the plant.
that little fan is all i have - but the cupboard leaks light (like crazy!) and therefore air as well - so that ventilates it.

I was worried that fan would dry the plants out but its doing a great job of keeping the cfl's really cool. they warm but i can touch them and it doesn't hurt.

For the smell i dont know what to say. this is my house. so i just wont let anyone in this room i guess. will that work?
I mean i can buy a grow tent and i plan to - but i only have so many $ a month to drop on this. so it would have to wait a few days.

No smell will become an issue. It will fill the whole house man.

I'm sure it has a lot to do with genetics and how well you grow it. lol I've read threads of ppl with a few plants that say it didn't smell outside of the room they had em in

Really? lol I've never had one fully flowered yet. On first grow but I didn't think just one plant would smell the whole house up lol
Oh it can and will. There are strains that smell more than others but to most of us they don't smell. If grown right they won't smell unless your right up on them BUT they will stink to some extent. There are threads were I've stated the fact my plants don't stink unless you touch or move them. The key word is movement folks forget if you have a fan blowing in your room and your ladies are dancing that's movement thus kickin up the stank to a degree.
