Advice on grow room size

Hi, so I'm starting out on my first growing adventure and I'm aiming for 12 plants. I'm planning on building a grow room and I have the option to expand to boot so my question is, what big of a space should I start out with?

What growing method do you plan on using? Plant numbers don’t make the difference when it comes to yield, canopy growth does. So if you have 8 monster plants, you may be better off than twelve... Unless you want 12 monsters. You’ll just have to spend a little more time vegging. Plus it’s easier to maintain... instead of looking at plant numbers, I would figure out space and wattage allowance first, then determine plant numbers...

I'm using soil. When it comes to space I have a whole backyard at my disposal for an indoor grow room. I just want to know what would be the minimum space requirement for that amount of plants. I actually plan on growing a lot more, I have a friend I live with who grows as well who'd be willing to help.

It depends on the size of the plants

The longer you veg will help determine the size of your plants, along with pot size, light density, and growing method. Technically you can grow a lot of plants in a small area, but they don’t produce much yield. It’s called SOG, and most growers don’t spend much time in veg, and usually use 1-3gal pots, so they get small plants but fast turnover. Or you can veg for 6-8weeks and grow in 10 gal pots, and get really large plants that’ll require a lot of space and wattage.... so I’ll repeat myself. You shouldn’t care about plant numbers, but canopy size. If your friend is an experienced grower, he should be able to explain this better... the first thing I would worry about is the size of area you want. If it’s a personal grow, and if you’re doing it right, you don’t need tons of space. Also if you’re in a illegal area, plant numbers matter.

The biggest space you can afford to build. You don't have to use it all if you don't want to but you cant use space you don't have.

if you're planning to SOG, you can grow a shit load of plants in a small area, if you want to scrog, you need a lot more room, at least the size of the screen you intend to use, plus a few inches between plants. if you plan on growing trees, about 2.5 to 3 feet square per plant....
i have a 4x7 room and can fit 6 trees in it, but its slightly crowded, 5 is better i think, gives them a little room between plants, room to reach in and water. so if i can fit 6 in a 4x7, you ought to be able to get 12 in a 10x12 or so, if you're just letting them grow naturally.
thats just grow space, too. i'm not counting veg area, storage space, any of that into it.
i'd also try for at least an 8 foot ceiling, unless you use cobs or QBs, your lights will take up about a foot, you need at least another foot for clearance, and your pots at least another, so if you start with an 8 foot ceiling, you're already down to 5 foot plants

I would advice in the beginning if you are a new planter then go with 3-4 plants then move to 12. I am also a marijuana planter and currently have 6 plants. i have 6x5 space and they are well accommodated. now they are pretty large and thing about shifting those in the open. i use artificial lighting because this is winter season and there is dearth of direct light so i use artificial light which helps in making the environment warmer. you can get valuable advice from your nearby marijuana dispensaries.

Good advice to start small to learn first, unless you have an experienced mentor who can guide you.

Worst case scenario is you'll get 12 plants going and realize how much work it is and then have a bad Harvest due to inexperience and that's what you will remember and you'll give up...
I have seen that over and over again.

Start with a 5 x 5 area and for plants. Run that a couple times and then you'll know exactly what you want to do for a bigger area and you won't have to redesign everything to accommodate...

You make no sense, you have an entire backyard to use for indoor? You were asked specifics and didn’t answer what pot size, veg time , lights etc. Then you randomly throw out 80 plants. If this is your first grow start small and possibly have some success or start large and guarantee failure... it’s a lot of work, GL

I've run the gambit from growing a shit-ton of small plants to growing a few trees.

It does depend on how you want to grow. I've found a perpetual grow schedule (plants that start 12/12 at 2 week intervals in my case) optimizes space, you always have something to harvest, you don't need a bunch of plants in veg, and not all plants will be mature at the same time. My rule-of-thumb is to have at least 2'x2' space for each plant....and that keeps them snug but still gets light to the lower half of the plants.

You mentioned COBs.....If that's what you're going with, you are limited to short plants if you want positive results as that type of lighting does not have the penetration that HID's offer. The best growing technique for that lighting is a SOG or SCROG or a vertical grow......so going with a perpetual schedule doesn't apply.

Honestly, if you're a new grower attempting advance growing techniques like SOG's and SCROG's are really something for those that have been growing for awhile. Here's my opinion (everyone has one) of how to start growing.

Are you talking about the 12/12 photo-period grow straight from seedling? I have always been interested in that and would really like to do that. I'm just afraid I might kill them or something :p I heard that led's now can actually offer better penetration than HID's.

Lol I'm just messing with you guys. I am going to do 4-5 plants as was recommended. I mean I can build a shed of what ever size I need outside. I'm sorry I don't know a lot, I was just going to put them in a medium size pot and transfer them if needed and I was planning on doing a 4 month veg time but I'm actually interested in no veg time, just straight to flower but if that proves to difficult I'm going to look into SOG so maybe 2 or 3 gallon pots.
