Algae prevention alternative to coco covers?

The coco covers are pretty pricey at over $1 apiece. Anyone use any alternatives? This would be for hand-watering rockwool, so the water does need to make its way through the cover..

Do you simply pour the tupur on top of the rockwool in a pot? Does it add any pH or nutrient variation?

Nope tupur is a soilless hydro coco mix. There's nothing in it besides coco, perlite, and compost from the redwood forest out in Oregon. Great stuff I prefer it over straight coco gives great ph and ec buffer

Just use a sterilizer in your water from the get go and you won't have any problems. Calcium hypochlorite (pool shock) for homemade or you can buy some premade ones from hydro store.

lol sorry I think I read that as "hey" originally, never thought of hay as a cover :) do you ever get any rot or any other issues I might not foresee with hay? Do you just use any hay?
No issues at all honestly it's just nice because it allows my plants to drink all the nutes and lower evaporation and I use just hay lol
