amounts of electricity?

I'm new to growing, and am currently using 4' fluorescent grow lights (4 of them). My plant seems to be flowering fine.
Anyway, I'm thinking of using these tubes for the veg state, and then switchign to HPS during flowering.
First, If I get a 400 watt HPS bulb/ballast/reflector, would this be sufficient for 8 or so smaller plants in a closet setup (air cooled of course).
Second, how much power would this draw based on a 12 on 12 off schedule?
Am I correct in assuming it would draw the same amount as 4, 100 w lightbulbs?
I dont want a noticeable spike in my power bill.
Thanks for your help!

okay, have to focus to get the smirk off my face dude;)

a 400W bulb will draw the same kind of wattage as 4 100Ws will do, that one you got right, so switch like 8 100W bulbs in your place with 25W CFLs and no hike in you bill will show;)

to the math, power is bought of the provider in kWh. one kWh is 1000W per hour. a normal 400W HPS will use this amount in 2.5h then and in 12h about 4.8 kWh. so lets say the kWh cost in your case 10 cents, the day of HPS will cost you like less the 50 cents - and this would add up to only $30-$40 which buys nothing in weed;)

oh, and a 400W HPS is strong enough to work on up to 16sq ft, so more then sufficient to your task;)
