An Article For the Newbs By A Newb

Okay so I this is my first grow. I was so stressed hoping that I didn't mess up so I spent a lot and i mean a lot of time looking everything up to see how to grow perfectly. The reality is... their is no perfect way. There are definitely better ways but looking up peoples opinions and this and that can drive someone crazy... Everyone thinks their way is better or best.

My advice to everyone... mary jane is a plant. Resilient non the less but needs to be taken care of. Newts are important yes. Lighting, soil, environment, all important. So i am going to tell you how my grow is going so far the mistakes i made and what steps i should have taken.

First mistake i made was the size of my grow tent. Wanted to grow indoors its very cold where I am. My advice if you are growing a saliva dominant plant make sure you have the room to do it. Lsting is your best bet or even scrogging... My advice before you even think of buying seeds watch bunch of youtube videos on how to manage your space. I wanted to grow strawberry cough and trust me.... was not ready for when it began to flower and the growth spurt it had... So just be cautious of your space and how to manage it.

Second was my lighting. I went fluorescent. If you are going to go fluorescent spend the extra dollar to get at least 8 tubes that put out more then 20k lumen. I bought a two tube that was doing well but had three plants and the penetration wasn't all that great. So i ended up having to buy more cfl's and the amount of wiring inside was a mess. Now I am flowering and am using both my Flouro and HPS. Which is working out great but because of the space issue my plant is being burned quite often.

Third watering lol.... People say plants like dry spells blah blah blah. Don't water for 3 days blah blah blah. It is a plant. Plants need water to survive. If you are serious about growing check your plant out. You can make some mistakes when it comes to over watering and under. Measure the water out before you go there are some guidelines as to how much to use but every plant is different. Know your plant it will give of signs that its being over or under watered. 3 days guideline is whatever i say chef every day even if its a little peep. If you want a good healthy quality plant you need to put time and effort into it.

Newts on the other hand i won't get into, I'm not experienced enough to give an opinion aside from fox farms has been doing well for me and not to fert too early. Give the plant time to grow in veg before you start newt bombing.

5th is air odor control. If you are really worried about smell or mold or the temp getting to hot invest in an inline fan and carbon filter. If you can make one yourself go for it. Especially when using hps lights it gets hot in there. And my auto I'm growing started smelling 3rd week of veg. And i mean stank so good but literally you could smell her from far lol. Wasn't ready for that. Another thing you don't need to tell all you're friends about it. I mean if you have some close people who have grown and need advice sure but don't brag. You'll feel better about it trust me.

Get a thermometer, a timer for your lights and even a heated mat helps. Grab the essentials before you just throw seeds in the ground or pot. If you are a newb like me make sure you get what you need even just in case. Im sorry to tell you growing indoors is costly. Very costly now idk if you plan on doing whatever with your plants but make sure you are willing to spend a good sum of money. Don't go with the bare minimum or you may not be happy with your results. Money and potentially awesome plants wasted...

I am a newb this website has helped me a lot. Asking people for advice definitely helps but don't rely on it. Take notes of how the plants are doing... its fun to do. Take pictures. The more time you spend checking the plants out and getting everything you need before hand will help a lot. I know this isn't a lot of info. I just thought id try to reach out to some people who are first time growers like me stressing out about what may happen. Thought id give my opinion of how to maybe avoid some stress and tell you some of my mistakes. Hope you guys get something out of this. Happy growing!

Good advice. I too am a newbie and have killed several seedlings inc.Blue Dream Haze and Strawberry Cough by upping the nutes. Literally fried the poor things!

Go lightly. Too little plant will grow too much plant will die !!

Wish I had taken pics to document my fuck ups.

Oh yes don't get too excited and germinate more than you can handle.

I did and here is where I'm at

2x4 tent with 2 large autos, 4 Sativa seedlings and 4 small auto seedlings. Yup gotcarried away. oh yes 4 Strawberry Cough clones salvaged from my over nuted plants !

So now Im a bit crowded. The auto can go outside but with only 12-13 hrs light will not be great yield. Sure can put the sativas outside but no flower till what Sept?

Anyway nice article, Sandromang.

Good luck to all.

Please post up a pick of your a saliva dominant plant ..? .. as this is nothing but a rambling comment of how can I fuck up a grow, without actually applying any effort, post!

Actual study and application is done every day in Nth America by thousands of 16-60 years olds for the first time ...but you had trouble ....wonder why???

There is no magical formulas when it comes to marijuana horticulture, you honestly need to check your plant daily and read/react to its needs - in every aspect of your grow from watering to nutes to temp to humidity to pest control etc.

My plants love to be dried out - does that mean I am only gonna water them every 3 days because someone says so? No, there are other factors that come into play - temperature, humidity, and the lights you are using can have a drastic effect on how fast or slow your pot dries up.

This is my problem with people who don't research or put in time to learn a thing or two before jumping into this. Then you expect to be hand fed answers, and then blame the advice you were given like it was the reason your grow failed and not yourself.

Growing indoors can be costly, that doesn't mean it is.

Good basics, except for your watering advice. I don't believe in the 3 day rule, I simply believe in being able to look at the soil and being able to tell when its ready. My simple strategy is to completely soak the soil until water just begins to drain from the holes on the bottom, then wait for it to dry out completely. This is the best way to promote a full and healthy root system. Plants don't need constant damp soil, you'll begin to starve the roots of oxygen, and if you don't water enough to cause the soil to become completely damp, the root system will stay shallow.

I agree with you fully. Thats why i said 3 days rule is whatever. That never worked with me... If i waited 3 days my plants would be drooping so intensely.

My main point if anything is this. Don't go searching for the perfect grow guide. Just like shaded said "his is my problem with people who don't research or put in time to learn a thing or two before jumping into this. Then you expect to be hand fed answers, and then blame the advice you were given like it was the reason your grow failed and not yourself." Exaclty what i was trying to get across..

Cheers man, wasn't trying to come across as a prick!

Hopefully your current grow is going much better :) Like most things in life, it's good to have a reference but you need to be quick on your feet and be able to react/respond accordingly.

Failing is ok it teaches you the error of your ways.. now you can ask 5k questions and will receive never the same answer.. so just chill and watch your lil girls grow is what i say.. IMG_3126.jpg
