Any electricians?

I have been wondering about becoming an electrician...i was wondering if anyone here is an electrician and can give some good advice. I'm only in my first year of school so I still have to take my gen ed classes but I just wonder what the steps i need to take after that would be.

find a good company to work as an apprentice for. you will probably need to be in an apprentiship for a good 3-4 before your licensed.

I apprenticed for 4 years (8000hrs) with 3 years of school to complete the apprentiship for 442a electrician(industrial). I did an extra 1000hrs and completed, wrote and passed my 309a,,which is construction maint. electrician..industrial,commercial and residential..

I am going to an electrician apprenticeship for 5 years in May. Canuck do you make alot of money? My grandpa was an electrician and said he made alot of money. Whatd you make starting after your apprenticeship

cheers to you Cannuck,,I'm a certified Roofer,,lol,,been so for over 20 years,,live in the same area too,,so if you need some roofing done,,as I may need some electrical done,,,maybe we could HOOK up one day

I'm a retired carpenter,got my ticket in '75 , I'm not far from you and canuck too.

I've been an industrial electrician for 25 years. The requirements and wages will depend on where you are located. I make more than a lot of people who have college degrees.

Started my apprentiship at around 8 bucks and hour,, thats when I was right out of high school.. Did some residential,commercial,but mostly industrial...Finished my ticket and after 3 years became electrical leader at a company that builds automation for the big 3,,making around 90K per year..I left there 6 years ago to be a maint. foreman for the big 3..making between 120k to 140k per year now..thats overtime included.. Its a great trade and alot of the time I wish I worked back on the floor with the guys,, My guys make anywhere between 80k to 120k per year depending on how much O.T they take..thats working on the floor..

BIG 3? YOU MEAN BIG 2 GM & BUY TOYOTA NISSAN OR PORSCHE AND ONLY BUILT BY NON UAW OR CAW THAT 90% NEVER TURNED A WRENCH IN THEIR LIFE. THEY FILL LARGE 3INCH DIA. LEAKS IN BODY FLOOR WITH PLAY-DOE AND SHIP-IT BECAUSE ITS ABOUT QUANTITY NOT QUALITY. CORPERATE GREED SUCKS

you CAN get a lot of money tthrough being a sparky, you just gotta be dedicated and make good choices.

My buddy was an electrician and worked in old buildings in the city for some company. He said he made $50 or so bucks an hour, I can't remember exactly.

Its tough to get an apprenticeship in my area, I worked for a company for about 2 and a half years without a raise...the ratio between foreman for the comany and apprentices has to be 3-1,At least. Making $12.50 an hour wasn't soooo bad but for that long yea it sucked.Have to be persistant.Soon as you get "signed up" and go to school you are set you can get a job with pretty much any company.Look in the classafieds,theres always lots of jobs for ppl with experience of 1st/2nd term but not many hiring willing to train.

im a certified journeyman... and if you like physical dirty.. hard labor than its for you... not to say I hate what I do.. but 10 years ago when I went to school...i never thought about the 150 degree attics or dirty crawl spaces...spiders , bats..ect... they never tell you that stuff...lol... i thought hmmmm... very ideal...just hook wires together and make great money doing it....lol..... then again you may get lucky and get a clean job indoors doing assembly( big panels) .... but think hard man... if your just starting out ...maybe think about going for comp programming or something...lol....good luck...
