Any Hydro Users stop nutes after 5 weeks?

I have a buddy who runs 10 week strains. He says that after week 5 in flower he only gives his plants straight water. He found that doing this the end result/yield didnt change at all versus giving the plants nutes all the way through. Has anyone tried something similar to this? I know towards the end of the grow his plants looks horrible but the buds are still nice, dense and smelly. The smoke is still primo after the cure as well.

What do you all think?

Wow I'm just a newbie at growing and haven't had a harvest yet, but wouldn't flushing with 5 more weeks to go make the plant unhealthy? Since it's hydro, there are no nutrients present outside of the water. The plant will use all of it's macro/micro nutrients quickly, especially in flowering wouldn't it? The leaves, the main source of "food" for the plant, will die pretty quickly after several weeks of no nutrients, no? I would imagine that can decrease yield if anything.

Has he run side-by-side, simultaneous comparisons using nutrients/no nutrients, to really see if the yield is unchanged?

From what he has told me. He ran both setups giving nutes all the way through the 10 week flower and only 5 weeks through flower. Both yielded very similar and this was with the same # of plants, lights etc.

Why would you starve the plant at the most crucial point of growth and swelling?
Those are my thoughts. However, my friend swears that he only nutes until the 5th week and saw really no difference in doing that versus going 10 weeks with nutes. I'm too scared to try it lol. Just checking to see if others have tried something similar.
