It would appear that contamination is easier to avoid using non grain substrates. Too cool. Instead of all the makeshift rubbermaid "terrariums " and ultrasonic humidifiers with hundreds of cakes you just have one big ass one. I love it.

Looks like trich. Can't be sure tho. it's in a sealed bag. Take it to your trash bin and chuck it still sealed. Just one puff into the atmosphere of your home will permanently alter your ability to grow more.

Trich spores are adhesive and so they don't tend to spread on their own through the air. However, they will still tend to spread...and mites just love the spores, they will spread them everywhere. The spores even attach to dust particles that DO waft through the air.


And if it is penicillium it is far far worse.
If it is aspergillus then you can even have health problems. (Worse if it is black).

You're sterile room was "sterile" for a few seconds. The second it was opened it became a disinfected room. That's only if you were wearing a hazmat suit/breathing apparatus or the like while in there sterilizing.

I wear a mask and gloves when I open it but I see what u sayin, I even got booties for my feet

Indeed. If he has a true hepa and a whole room air management system it could be deemed sterile.

But the art is in doing sterile work quickly, keeping that which must be sterile in unitized containers like bags or jars or dishes and then constructing your substrates to be resistant to contamination using air flow, ph and robust mycelium.

Yep. Its the hardest part about growing fungi. I used to go through bleach and lysol like crazy. I even payed for hepa filters for my wole apartment. Shit can literally come through the walls.

You did the right thing tossing it. That looked like bacterial infection. I bet it smelled like putrid yeast. @canndo is right about working quickly while the "sterility" remains. It just takes one fly/gnat or piece of dust to contaminate . Its always a race to get it colonized before any of that stuff can happen.

It's been 9 days and my monotub isn't even half way colonized, I see across different forums the average wait is 5-10 days. Anybody uses monotubs can help shed some light?
