Aquaponics Has Anyone Tried It?

Hi guys, I have been here for a while and grow organic, so I have this greenhouse....next to the swiming pool....any Ideas? Has anyone on here tried it?

...really, no one? aquaponics...raising fish in sinbio with your plants?anyone?

i would like to try some tilapia and some hybrids for the future.

a few people have done it allready, with decent results.... no one has had any major or evolutionary grows with it tho. if you look around you can find some.

It sounds like a cool idea. But I think you'd get the same results if you watered your plants with water from a fish tank. Personally I'd water with fish tank water and float around in my pool puffing on my lovely buds.

Stoney side note: If you filled the pool with sharks and used shark shit to fert your plants, that would probably a first.

I think its a great idea. However, I would not start with MJ, unless I could find some specific info on it. I would try one of the fish/plant combo that are already proven, let my health bacteria establish and learn a little about the relationship first hand. And then you could clone away and give it a try.
It would appear to be the perfect relationship.

Yup , and feed the sharks the theivs that my dogs catch....naahhh to mid-evil for me LOL...

Totally agree...the whole aquaponics thang will have to wait 'till next year since I'm in Maine and its already june....but definately vegies first...tomatoes I think is a good indicator and fairly similar to MJ....I guess talapia is out of the question, but catfish are preety rugged....or rainbow trout, since they are native species...I still have to do a bunch of research, but I think I've missed it this year...

yup same Idea , slightly bigger scale...this is my greenhouse...

I like the used windows. What did you use for the top?

pvc electrical conduit and greenhouse plastic, .6mm

I understand leafy veggies like lettuce do well in aquaponics. There are significant weaknesses for flowering plants however.

...definately need more research...the way I picture it at the moment , it wont be a true auaphonics sistem anyway...fill the pool filter with crushed oyster shells, also run filter intake hose down to the basket on the bottom, containing more oyster shells (primary filter) recirculate the water like a regular pool. When its time to water greenhouse, set the filter on backflush and saturate the greenhouse raised bed with concentrated mix of water/fish poo...I'm not ready to figure out how to get that water back, so I was just planing to top the water level of with the hose....I have had difficulty finding resourcess on line , any suggestions?

For aquaponics in the USA I'd recommend koi. Tasty fish, pretty, and if you know a breeder locally you can get good deals.

I love koi, had a pair for years, unfortunately owning koi is illigal in the state of Maine....invasive species
