Autoflower

How do you guys think an autoflower planted in a 1/2 gallon pot will do? Soil mixture was garden soil, compost, bone/blood/kelp meal, high P bat guano, and perlite. Only water so far, once flowering compost tea feedings.

The 1/2 gallon pot will work if you're not willing to put it into something bigger. Adding more nutes than needed will not increase your harvest. It could be harmful to your plant. Autos are generally somewhat nute sensitive as it is. What strain? Got pics?

Its a diesel lowryder plant. Its about 4 inches tall, no sex yet. Very stinky plant so far, was started in a very tiny pot then transplanted into 1/2gallon pot with very light organic nutrients.

Maybe I could cut the bottom off the pot, and set it into a bigger one, and the roots will grow down into that pot? Hopefully increasing my harvest.

So I've had some experience with auto's, maybe I can shed some light. Auto's, as opposed to regular photo-dependent strains, are VERY root dependent, and will get only as big as their roots can grow. For this reason, they respond to LST quite well, BUT it means the energy for producing thc and trichomes will be used instead to grow back to the light. Autoflowers should only be transferred once, from starter cup to as big of a pot as you can get your hands on. If done early on around week 3, the auto will grow exponentially bigger and stronger. There's a lot of advice from people WAY more experienced than myself around on RIU.

In summation, let them do their work, try to not disturb the roots, and you should be in weed heaven soon enough!

Thankyou slappy, im either going to leave her, or cut the bottom of the pot off, and not transplant. Thanks alot slappy, how did your autos turn out? Potency and yield wise?

Now that ive been looking around though, ive seen a few very nice autos grown in 16oz party cups. But those were grown indoors, hopefully this girl will do ok in a 1.7ltr(half gallon) pot outdoors.

I grow ALL my autos in a 2 ltr pot and get an oz avg off each....under a 400w hps and biobizz organics...small containers NOT a prob regardless what anyone else says although ya have to stay on top of em a bit more to keep from drying out too much.....been at it 5 years with autos and have gone through all the varying trials and tribulations...AND, they are no more sensitive than photos IMO....
RIU typically isn't auto friendly...some very very bad opinions and advice here on autos.....

Thanks a bunch Oldreefer, i have hope for this girl now! I just wanted a few autoflowers in hopes of getting some mid-harvest smoke.

I am not Disagreeing with most of your advice Oldreefer, but I have to say that planting in the main container with no transplant will help them out, even though they might not show signs of stunting right away if transplanted. If you study the root formation of autos you can see why... Most autos out there start by putting down a very long taproot, sometimes up to 15 inches down if it has the space. This is why it is advisable to get tall pots instead of wide ones (party cup profile is a good shape) with autos. Of course there is the party cup method, and depending if you're using soil or hydro with controlled powerful light, you will get a great yield (up to 3/4 of an ounce in one main bud on a stick) for such a small area but as Oldreefer said, it's definitely harder to keep the moisture right all the time unless you are using hydro. I have seen a Lowryder plant produce as little as a half a gram in a large container because the roots bound up so quickly before transplant compared to Photoperiod plants. The main thing to remember is that autos have very vigorous growth, up to 3 or 4 more times as much as photoperiods! This in mind, transplanting can be done successfully, but needs to be done quickly after germination so the long taproot has somewhere to go...

Growing autos outside will surely require larger pots so as not to impede growth, I have taken Lowryder #2 outside in a 2.5 gallon pot for germination, and seen them bust the max height set by the seed breeder before they even start flowering! I'm talking 16 inches when the first pistils make their appearance! This is a plant that supposedly maxes out at 20 inches in rare circumstances at maturity... by the time they were done they were all around 25-30 inches and one of them produced over 2.5 ounces!

Good luck and happy growing!

Forgot to say that if you use larger pots you will get more side bud growth from autos, whereas a small container will give you a bud on a stick with little or no branching...

Shit I'm forgetful today, was also going to say that the party cup method is great if you can get enough seeds cheaply. the math is this: one party cup at 16 ounces with a little spacing is about 4x4 inches. if you filled a space of about one yard full of 16 ounce cups you would have 81 plants all in a 3x3 foot area and each producing at least a quarter of dried bud. This would yield right around 20 ounces of bud!

Hmm thanks Calvin. I only had one lowryder look good out of all of them. When I transplanted she was about 2 weeks old, roots just touching the bottom. Its only been about 2 days since the transplant into the 1/2g pot.

Think it would be possible to get atleast half zip in a 1/2g pot?

Or should I cut bottom of pot off and let her grow into the ground?
